Face Mask while on Remicade

By Lenora Taylor Friday, August 01, 2008

Has anyone considered using a face mask while on Remicade?  I start my infusion soon and I'm considering using a mask in a daily basis just to prevent any type of infection.  I know it will look silly, but when it come to my health, who cares about looking silly.

My experience with my first Remicade Infusion

Hi Lenora

A face mask Aye!! mmmmmmmm.................Sealed

I would probably go for the nose wash and the wash my hands treatment myselfTongue out Alot less stuffy

I think those little germs would probably find their way in through the mask any way

Honestly Lenora,

it's surprising how well you can stay with your immune system not 100%

For Example

I would be in with a class of coughing and spluttering young children for a whole day, and my health wasn't any worse than before I had any treatment.

Strangely enough it was maybe even better..................

Maybe the nose treatment really worked!!!

I also insist that my family don't cough into the air(cause this we breathe)

or cough into their hands ( now where do hands go???- keyboards, door handles, my hand etc  O dear.....)

They cough into the crook of their elbow, shoulder or a thick tissue, use once and throw away into the bin-not left on the eating table

And because our own hands touch everything, it makes good sense to do the hygene thing and wash them before putting any food into your mouth

So what is the nose wash you ask???

Method

Dissolve1/2 a teaspoon of salt in a tea cup of warm water

Drink this through your nose

and spit it out your mouth, and blow it out your nose

i also block one nostril with my finger and snort it up one nostril at a time for a greater impact

the first time you do this you my think you are drowning cause you don't understand where the water is going

but when you do it a few times it is easy to accept

This i do as a habit morning and night, just as i would brush my teeth

my husband and my kids do it when they get a cold and it gets rid of it !

If i feel a bit of mucus in my nose, i do the nose wash

you can do it every hour if you have some cold starting-

best to nip it in the bud

this stops sore throats from developing too!!!

Debbie has it right...NOSE WASH works!  However, we find it much easier to use a "Neti" pot with the same solution Debbie recommended (you can also purchase the solution in a jar and just add warm water, easy this way).  I suffered from chronic sinus infections and the nose wash keeps me off anti-biotics and since using it religously (1 per week when well more when sick) I have not even had a sinus infection (use to get them 3-4 times per year) it has been over 2 years since I had one!  Has relived my husbands chronic allergies and cleared up countless colds.  When we had those HORRIBLE wild fires here in California last year the sky was literally black for over a week, and there was 2 inches of ash all over EVERYTHING.  We used the Neti Pot every day and the water came out of our nose(s) BLACK, and we did not go outside more than to our cars to go to work!!  Not kidding, that is how much "crap" we all breathe up!  It works that well to rid the nose of germs too!

IT WORKS....google "Neti Pot" Dr. OZ on Oprah recommends it too.

I would tell you to use the Neti Pot after being in heavy contact with the public (like flying, church, school, or around children).  You can not use it too much!!

Good luck, and please let us know how your treatment goes.

GOOD...just follow the directions and keep your head tilted AND breathe through your mouth only!  It may take you a few tries to get the angel of your head just right ...the first time I tried it felt like I inhaled water and it burned a bit, but got it right the second time.

You will like it.  I have recommended to all my family & friends and now they all thank me and have clean noses and less illness.

I have Psoriatic Arthritis and have been on Remicade (600ml) w/ Methotrexate (7.5)for almost a year.  I'm a geriatric Social Worker who goes into the homes of people w/ illness, hygiene issues etc...and I have a 4 year old in daycare.  I basically have the envirornment of a sewer rat. At first I was totally freaked out about the supressed immune system and wore a face mask, gloves and gallons of antibacterial gel. My entire adult life  (age 39) I have been sick all winter. Oddly, during this year of treatment I have been healthier than ever. No colds, no flu, nada!!! I've stopped wearing the mask and glove and use a somewhat normal amount of antibacterial gel. My experience has been that these drugs create a more normal immune sytem. I hope you experience the same. Good Luck LJ
