I have been taking plaquenil for about three years, since the time I was diagnosed with RA. I didn't know it could cause hearing loss, I wish I had known sooner. Now I have this high pitch sound in my ear, and apparently there is no cure for it. Is there anything I can do to stop the advancing of this ear thing? anyone?

Wow! I actually went to an ENT because I felt so much stuffiness in my rt. ear and he actually put a tube in it...helped some with the hearing part, but still feels congested as do my sinuses (and I don't have allergies)...did not put 2 and 2 together that this could be RA-related. Good info in this article. Thanks!
i have ra and had it for 10year now and i have been on all the medicine cant seem to find the right one for me but i did notice that my hearing is gone and so i went to the doctor and i do have tinnitus plus now he say i have tympanomastoidectomy so now i have to go under surgery 3 to for 4 hours where it has eat up the wall and i have a hole in the eardrum, its from the infection, he said some of my med could have help it got worst but he wont say what , so now end of may i am having surgery but i have quit all medicine there are worst that taking themand causing other problem , predisone hurt your liver, so what does it do to the other organs, so have it check out as soon as you can if caught early its not as bad as i let it go to
I have had RA for 29 years, about 21 years ago I started feeling like I always had water in my ears. Now I see it in print--I guess I'm not crazy.
I am so glad to see this. About three years ago it felt like my left ear was always "clogged". I began using debrox to no avail. Last year I went to an
ENT who could not see anything wrong. On a whim I decided to see if
RA and hearing issues were conncected and found this. I am on no medication for my RA which I have had since I was twelve and now am 40. My ear feels like I went swimming and is "crackly".
Not only did I have the water in the ear thing going on, when I went to an Ear, Nose & Throat doc about it he tested my hearing. The results were...It was all in my head

I find this interesting. I have read over the years how systemic RA is but not until now did I fully understand the scope. I also have started with a dry mouth problem also starting back about three years ago. I went to my dentist last week to see if there was anything wrong. He said my teeth/gums were pristine. I looked up dry mouth and arthritis and sure enough there is a connection to that also called sjorgens syndrome. My dry mouth is so bad that it wakes me up at night! If only the fluid in my ears could go to my mouth...................!!!
Amen to that! I often wake up with such a dry throat it is hard to swallow. I keep a water bottle at the head of the bed.
A product, Biotene Oralbalance gel, for dry mouth moisturizer, placed between your upper lip and teeth before you go to bed will keep your mouth moisturezed pretty well for about 8 hours.
