My replacement ankle is relatively pain free and i'm more than happy. However could you please tell me whether a constant tingling sensation around my toes and ball of foot is normal after the operation or a result of nerve damage and/or a trapped nerve? Also will it disappear in time?

Many thanks in advance.

Trin

Trin,

I am not a physician, so I can't give advice about a particular medical issue such as yours. I would recommend making an appointment to see the surgeon that performed your ankle replacement, or your physician who recommended the surgery, to discuss your concerns.

Best,

Christine

I had total ankle replacement surgery November 2, 2011. My implant is the STAR ankle replacement which needs no screws or cement. My tibia was shaved down and the Dr. drilled holes to insert the implant. Pain after surgery was minimal. I did have a nerve block, and was given Percoset and morphine for breakthrough pain. I was in a huge cast, non weight bearing for 2 weeks. That cast was replaced with a much smaller one and I was in that for 2 more weeks. After the cast was removed, they took out the sutures. I was in a walking boot and on crutches for 6 more weeks. At the end of 8 weeks I was able to walk and start back playing Golf. I wear an Ace bandage for compression, and after activity ice the ankle.

It's now been 3 1/2 months and I am able to play 18 holes of golf 3 times a week. There still is quite a bit of swelling, and some pain.

But the pain I have is nothing compared to before the surgery. It still stiffens up after sitting for long periods and when I get up in the morning. I know this will get better as time goes on.

If you're considering Total Ankle replacement-I recommend it. My range of motion is getting better all the time. I also, would recomment the STAR ankle implant. They do have a website with a list of Doctors that use it.
