Rheumatoid arthritis frequently affects the joints of the foot and ankle; commonly the joints that connect the toes to the foot (called the metatarsophalangeal joint or MTP joint).  This is what we usually call the ball of the foot.  And it can also affect the smaller joints of the toes.&nb...

I had stuff up surgery on my subtalar joint (joint immediately under ankle).  Am now confined to a wheelchair because of it.

The surgeon failed to note that my forefoot had subluxed (fallen over outwards) before fusing my subtalar joint.

Surgeon went ahead and fused my subtalar joint in the subluxed position just like my forefoot.  So both are now falling over sideways.  Puts strain on my knee and hip when I do transfer on it and is extremely painful to stand on and I can't walk on the side of my foot.  No other surgeon is confident of 'fixing this clamity'.

How long does a joint like a subtalar stay fused.  Any likelihood of it unfusing in time ?  Op. done 5 yrs ago.

Any one reading my story PLEASE always get 2 opinions before surgery  !!

I have juvenile onset arthritis, and recently (late 40's) have had trouble walking due to foot pain in the metarsal pad.  The best shoes for me at this time are an old pair of Danskos that I had in the closet, I never wore them due to the platform height, and my tendency to twist my ankle in anything other than flat shoes.  Now I can get around just fine in the danskos, though I still won't wear them for a long walk where I would be prone to fall. I am not able to walk barefoot for any distance now, and even taking a shower makes me quite unstable, but the danskos now provide stability for me.  Glad I bought them all those  years ago...  cy

I highly recommend using custom Orthotics inside of Doc Martin brand shoes....wow! what a difference-even over very very exspensive ortho shoes---they still are in the 80-100 dollar range, but they seem to help better than top orthotic shoe brands when used with custom orthotics...Hopes this post helps someone!!!!!Laughing
