Fun in the sun?

By Egwene1977 Sunday, August 21, 2011

So, I'm a newbie here...and just really need to vent.  I love going to the beach...it's been my "zen" place since I moved to NC 11 years ago.  However, I had a different experience this year.  I have only gotten sunburn twice in my life prior to this weekend, and never as bad as what I have now.  Of course, I checked WebMD as soon as I got home....wouldn't you know it, Methotrexate causes extreme sun sensitivity.  I am soooo pissed at my RA right now, I just want to scream.  Not only that, but I went on a wooden rollercoaster, which I love to do, but my neck was killing me when I got off the thing.  I am so irritated right now.  Yes, my inflammation is being controlled by my meds, but will I ever get my life back?

Hello & Welcome!

Yup, summer and methotrexate aren't the best of friends. A beach umbrella could turn out to be your new best friend though.... all the fun without the harmful rays of the sun! Think of it as an anti-wrinkle strategy! Tongue out

This whole RA thing can be really frustrating and a total kill-joy at times. And yeah, I know that it's irritating to have to make concessions and alternate arrangements.... but sometimes making a small change (like the beach umbrella) allows us to continue to do the things we love. Well, most of the things we love. Can't help you with the neck/roller coaster thing. I gave them up for the exact same reason. That turns out to be the ONLY thing my husband is grateful to RA for (The Big Chicken!).

Hope your burn heals quickly.

Thanks for the reply!  I'm in the peeling stage now, so I just hope my skin doesn't discolor.  Blech.  But you're right, I plan on investing in a BIG beach umbrella.
