I had a bad flare last month, was unable to see my doc but was able to see the PA. She gave me some pred and a steroid shot and started me on Arava. It took a few days as she said it would but, Hallelujah!, It subsided and I was able to function again. I have been doing remarkably well on the Arava, feeling better everyday it seems. But my elbows and shoulders, especially the right ones are still giving trouble and of course the morning time is worse.

I saw my doc at my regular appt last week and he just totally weirded me out. He said I probably have tendonitis in my elbows. Where in the @!%& would I get tendonitis I replied. I can hardly open a jar or sweep a floor most days. And in both elbows and shoulders? So he's sending me for an MRI and physical therapy. I am just totally confused by this man some days. I have already been through a couple of rheumy's and I am from a small town, not many choices. Granted the new meds are working very well, I have actually went for a couple of walks at the park, dancing with my grandbaby and can reach the mouse with virtually no pain now. I guess we have to take the weird with the good. I'll do the physical therapy, I am always up for something to help me out.

Hi,

Sounds to me like your doctor went off for a visit to la la land!!  But, the up side is that maybe the physical therapist will have some magic tricks up her/his sleeve for relieving pain! Laughing

Hope you feel better soon!

Hi Nan,

I'm glad that your flare is subsiding.  The word "flare" has its own world of meaning for those of us with RA doesn't it?

I have read that people with RA are more prone to tendonitis.  From what I know about anatomy,  tendons have synovial membranes similar to the joints.  So its seems very possible to me that if you had a lot of inflammation within the joint during the flare, that you could also have some residual inflammation in the local tendons.  So it would not be an overuse tendonitis but tendonitis associated with the flare.  I'm not an MD, but I used to teach anatomy to nursing students and I'm wondering if this is what your MD is thinking.  Just out of curiosity, ask your PT about this.  Either way, PT is a good follow-up and will hopefully help you fully complete your recovery from the flare.  Good luck!

Hi Nan,

Josephine has it right. If you do have tendonitits, it could have happened while you were brushing your teeth. It is the RA that did it. You can read about how RA can affect tendons in the usual trustworthy sites like healthcentral and web md and medincine net... Just google it.

Your doctor may have been insensitive to have not explained this. That really aggravates me. Tongue out RA is really complicated and we need to all (dr and patients) be on the same team!

Would love to talk more to you. I got a new email just for that. rawarrior@att.net if you'd like to try it. Hope you r doin better soon, Kelly
