How do you find local groups?

I was reading a share post today and I, like others would like to help others with RA or any disability. I can't do alot but I would like to give back. I am lucky enough to have a great husband and kids who help out when I am hurting but there are so many out there who have no one or no one who will help. There are no local groups where I live but I am sure there is a need.

 A couple of weeks ago my husband, a police officer, was called to a womans house who had placed an emergency call. He arrived to find a 40ish woman sitting in her garage in extreme pain, she has RA. She had called for an ambulance to take her to the hospital, my husband offered any assistance she needed and waited with her for the ambulance to arrive. He said she was hurting soooo bad and he could sympathize due to his experience with me. I felt so bad for her and wanted to check on her but of course he cannot tell me anything about her due to his job.

 I can't do alot but I could cook a meal or sweep a floor, do a load of laundry, something anything. Poor woman, she has no one to help her.

 That's when my husband tells me he offered to lock up her house as she got into the ambulance and she said, "no need my boyfriend is in there". WHAT!

 He never checked on her the whole time my husband was there, never came out when the ambulance came, didn't follow the ambulance to the hospital nor offer to drive her there himself. WOW!

 And 2 weeks later I am still worrying about her.

We live in semi-rural Alabama. You either have to go to Atlanta or Montgomery for stuff and that's a good 100 miles in either direction. How can people in areas like mine find others, groups or even try to start a support group?
