I have had severe RA for 30 years. I am very disabled from it and in a wheelchair. I am now having very severe hip pain and Iam seeing and orthopedic surgeon inBoston. Id like to know if you feel they can do a hip replacement if I am unable to walk because of Ra in my knees and also knee contractures...

It is very likely that they will be able to do surgery even with you being unable to walk and having knee and other joint contractures.

I have had JRA since I was little and traveled to many juvenile arthritis conferences. I have met many people with severe forms of disease that cannot walk and have multiple contractures. It took intensive rehabilitation to get them walking again and some still did not walk but the surgeries did increase mobility and decreased pain.

I don't know if you are a young person with JA or not but even if you aren't i suggest you check out a sight called arthritisintrospective.com There are many YA's theree with various degrees of RA and have faced multiple surgeries. I bet many there can and will help give you guidance and support. I know many of the people there and they are awesome.

Technology is amazing and many contractures are not completely fixed even when they seem to feel like they are. Most often, these joints can be worked on, stretched and gradually mobility can be increased to one degree or another.

    Good fortune
