My New Best Friend

Vanessa Collins Health Guide
  • I really blew it Monday.  I was off work for President' Day and so I took that opportunity to get a lot of things done.  Took the kitten to the vet to be spayd, ran the sweeper, went to an eye exam apointment, did grocery shopping, picked up the cat, came home and made sandwiches for a class at church and went to church.  I was feeling great about getting so much accompliched until I was in so much pain I could not sleep.  I finally realized I had forgotten to take my afternoon pain meds.

I got up, took my meds and a muscle relaxant, too.  Finally made it to work at one p.m. yesterday. I dusted off the my pretty blue cane and used it all day.  It helped a lot.  It does get in the way of some things, but it definitely reduces pain while walking and I don't feel as if I am stepping down into a hole everytime I take a step.  I also took my new best friend to work. That was a big step for me.

One coworker is one of those people who knows it all.  For instance, she knows for a fact I cannot be in so much pain I should have to miss work. You get the picture.  I saw her give me a sideways glance when I walked into work with my cane.  She didn't say a word......yet, but it was written all over her face.

The good news is that I don't care what she thinks anymore. I need the cane and I am going to use it. One doctor told me that using a cane can delay joint replacement surgery by years.

My boss was happy to see me.  She said, "About time, " when she saw me using the cane. So, all is good.  I can live with this.
