RA & Summer Activities: Spending Spoons Without Bending Them

V Health Guide June 26, 2013
  • It's summer time in America! We all have things to do. There are flowers and vegetables to tend, lawns to mow, bird baths to fill with fresh water, and weeds to trim. There are summer barbeques and pool parties and summer fairs. The list goes on and on. Unfortunately, we don't have enough spoons to d...

I don't know what to say… I'm alternating between rolling my eyes, wanting to smack you and laughing, because this was such a well written post. Also laughing because who among us haven't ignored the rest of our health? I probably shouldn't laugh, but it's funny to those of us who live with chronic illnesses.

It does have an impact on our general health, though — RA takes up so much room that doctors don't tend to pay attention to much else. It's really important that we take responsibility for our own health and keep them informed about what's going on. Even if it is a pain in the arse.

So... have you mowed the grass since? And did you wear a mask when you did?

Uhmmmmmmmm.  Yes, I have mowed the grass since.  But now I take a break every 20 minutes to save my shoulders and the rest of my body.  Foot in mouth   I also make sure I take my Zyrtec every day, use my allergy eyedrops every day, and use my Advair every day.  The mask.............well.............not so much! Tongue out

In Out, In Out - might be boring V but just a reminder, V, it's super important! So glad you saw your PCP and she treated your asthma so well. Having that oxygen level at a good level will make you feel better all over, flare or no! I know when I quit smoking it really helped me feel better.

You are so right about summer - I want to be in my flower beds, fishing, golfing, at the fairs, cooking out and swimming with the kids. I DO get over tired and sore. It's so easy to over do it and so hard to control that urge. Sometimes I pay to play but we need to be careful and not take it over the edge where we put our health at risk.

Hope you are feeling better and making sure you are doing that In Out In Out with efficency and some high oxygen content! There is a tree out there working hard for you, make sure you use it well!

      Hello, Leslie!

It is so hard to control our urges to overdo, isn't it?  My asthma is much, much better.  I recently switched PCP's and she has my asthma and my bp under control.  Amazing!  I am going to write an article about the importance of a good PCP next month.

I had to laugh/cry at myself last night.  I carried a bucket of water to the garden yesterday.  Actually, I carried two buckets.  Might as well be completely honest!  LOL  I'm not supposed to lift more than ten lbs.  Lesson learned.  I slept with my over the shoulder heating pad last night.  No physical activity for me today. I am so stubborn!  Wink

I hope you are having a wonderful summer.  Cool

      Blessings,

      V

Hey V! Glad to hear you are treating those allergies and asthma! And enjoying your summer more! Looking forward to hearing you talk about a good family dr. Saw mine just the other day. She takes good care of me; she has me come in twice a year for a going over even if I am not ill since, as she puts it, we need to make sure the other systems aren't being ignored. I have an autoimmune kidney disease that has been fairly benign and the kidney Dr has allowed her to take over the monitoring of it so she does that as well. My last visit I got a pnemonia vaccine and she took note that I should have this every 5 yrs rather than 10 since the biologics reduce the effectiveness - good doctor! Looking out for me! I never feel rushed when I see her. I always feel like we can discuss anything. She has time for my questions and makes me feel like a partner in my treatment.
