Hi Destiny,
Hang in there! I have horses too and I hear what you are saying. When I was first diagnosed I had a hard time caring for them, let alone even thinking of riding. Once my rheumatologist got my inflammation under control I was back out at the barn and in the saddle too. I don't ride as much or as long as I used to, but I can still get my horse "fix" when I need it. There are others who have posted on this site who also have horses and ride so I know I'm not the only one. Don't give up hope of riding, its too soon to know how this is going to go for you.
When you say you cannot take anti-inflammatories, are you referring to Advil and other NSAIDs? Have you seen a rheumatologist yet? There are lots of different anti-rheumatic meds and hopefully there will be one or more that you will be able to take. Can you take prednisone? It will give quick relief of inflammation until a long-term med can be found.
But be careful until you do get the inflammation under control, because joints are easily injured when inflammed. Don't force anything. Can you get a friend or family member to help with the more physical work until you have your RA under control? And remember to pace yourself. I had to do a little, rest, do a little more, rest, etc. for quite a while, and my husband continues to help with things that I used to do, like carrying hay bales and feed sacks, but I still do all the grooming, feeding and stall cleaning and even scrub out the water tank.
There are several good posts on this site for newly diagnosed RAers. Read and learn and you will gain some powerful tools with which to manage your RA.
Take care and best wishes,
Josephine
You're in the right place - here is a good place to start, as she mentioned, for the "Newly Diagnosed". Everyone is different, but we've all been 'newly diagnosed' at some time, and it can be a roller coaster. Talking with others who have gone through it is so helpful... best of luck!
