Hello all, I was diagnosed with RA at the age of 33 (44 now).  My Rheumy at the time back in 1999 insisted we begin by treating my RA very aggressively and prescribed Enbrel, MTX and Celebrex. Being that Enbrel was brand new to the market and I hated injections I was more than against any injections. As the months went by, approx 2-3, I was getting no relief, getting worse and taking upwards of 12 tabs of ibuprophen a day! I remember it started in my wrists then to my elbows then the knees. On subsequent visits to my Rheumy, he point blank stated that if  did not at least try using the Enbrel I would be in a wheelchair within 5 yrs and that tests results showed the disease was very well active. Well enough said, I was 33, had a 1 and a 2 yr old and could not stop thinking of what he said. Within the next week or two I received the Enbrel (thank god I had good med insurance, which covered almost all for a small copay). Then within 2-3 weeks of starting Enbrel ALL of my symptoms had vanishedSmile, it was the 'miracle drug' for me. I had already began getting the common 'nodules' on my wrists and they all vanished. My Rheumy at the time was absolutely correct in that the best approach at the begining was an 'aggressive' approach. All has been pretty much controlled with perhaps aflair up or 2 a month and lasted maybe a day or two at most. However , sadly the past 6-8 months have gone downhill for me. Knees, elbows, wrists, fingers, feet, neck all flaring. Up to a point where 2 times last month my now 12 yr old had to literally pull me out of bed as I was totally unable to do it myself . Then once I got on my feet I was moving around like a 'robot for the next hr or so. It was so very depressing to say the least...that once the wife and kids left for school and work I was literally in tears thinking of my fate for the future. My current Rheumy says I am on the 'Best of the best ' meds and seems the Enbrel may have done all it can do. I am sooo scared and confused at this point, from calling in sick at work and losing my job, to my being able to provide for my now 3 boys including a 3 yr old! Currenlty has me on the same regimen, enbrel, mtx, aleve(2-3 a day) and has upped my pain meds Vicodin to 100 a month plus 100 Percocets as needed. I am scheduled to see him again tomorrow and I am guessing just to re-up. The last visit was two weeks ago and the swelling in my ankle had gone up to my knee, calf was a hard as a rock where the rhuemy rushed me over for tests of blood clots (thank god all came back negative). What was required was 2-3 days off my feet and elevated above the heart level. At this point I just dont know any more   . But I do know that Enbrel has worked wonders for at least the last 10 years for me..
