Are There Any Drugs Patients Can Take and Still Drink Alcohol?

By Mark Borigini, M.D., Health Pro Monday, August 27, 2007

Question:

I was diagnosed with RA more than 2 years ago and opted not to go on Methotrexate or any other "serious" drugs because you have to stop drinking. I'm on Hydroxychloroquine but can feel my condition getting worse, especially in my shoulders. Are there any drugs patients can take and still have cocktails or beers on the weekends without fear of liver damage?

Answer:

Even without prescription drugs, cocktails and beers obviously can cause liver damage. There are some rheumatologists who would suggest a biologic agent such as Humira or Enbrel for those patients who insist on taking significant amounts of alcohol. Talk to your rheumatologist.
