Battle of the Med.'s, the Mind and My RA.

By Rena Wednesday, April 13, 2011

I am going to have to revisit my medications and evaluate what is working and what is not working...Again!  I guess that is just going to be how it is for those of us with RA.  We start a medication and some work well and some have to be stopped due to side effects or etc.  Then...the ones that do work for a while, begin to loose effectivness.

It takes me a while to realize I am feeling rotten.  I guess I subconsciously ignore my aches and pain.  I find that if I am mindful and aware of how my body feels...it can be quite depressing and discouraging.  Who wants to focus on that?  I will admit that I have a bad habit of ignoring the aches and pain until I am more effected than I should be.  I guess it is my "ignore it until it goes away" theory.  But...as we all know...RA does not go away.  We may have some periods of remission (for those who have periods of remission) but eventually the RA sneaks back in.

I am trying to be more mindful and aware of my body and what it needs.  Right now my body is telling me it needs to be replaced/repaired/overhauled!  Darn beginner meditation and beginner yoga dvd's.  Undecided

I will prevail.  It is just going to take some time.  I need to work on my patience and my being kind and gentle to myself right now.  I also need to get aggressive in looking for another Rheumatologist who is kind, gentle and mindful of me.  I dred starting over with a new Rheumy, but it is necessary.

I currently have a Rheumy who has so many patients and is working out of two offices in two different towns approx. 70 miles apart.  He is being very aggressive at building his two very busy and I am sure, very profitable businesses.  If I call, the nurses at either office, they are so busy they can't even focus on my call or my reason for calling.  I am also beginning to see a great deal more mistakes.  These are all "red flags" that I cannot ignore and will not go away.  We all deserve to be treated well and receive good medical care.

My Rheumy has his patients fill out a questionnaire and draw/circle what hurts on a chart of the human body at every office visit.  He then evaluates what you have indicated is hurting.  In other words...you are pretty much performing the patient physical evaluation/examination yourself!  He then usually looks at my hands and says, "Yes these joints are swollen" and that is about it.  NOTE:  For the past several years, I had written about my hands being numb and or hurting.  I just centrely had carpal tunnel release surgeries on both hands due to my finally being diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel syndrome and severe muscle atrophy.  Some of the damage may be permanent, my hand surgeon says. Maybe if I had a Rheumy who was more aware of his patients, I would not have had to get to the "Severe" stages of carpal tunnel syndrome and muscle atrophy.  Maybe I could have started with cortisone shots to reduce inflammation instead of going directly to the knife!

I can relate to your post, Rena. I too, have had my share of bad rheumy's.  I've seen two.  They were both bad.  The first one said I had RA, but then thought I was drug seeking. I walked out of his office and never went back. The one I just fired, like your rheumy, is way too busy.  He has a main office two hours away from the clinic where I saw him.  He also sees patients at another clinic 30 miles north of the clinic where I saw him.  The nurses are "outpatient clinic" nurses, not really his nurses. And...........they are too busy to get it if they had the ability to get it.  You post reminded me of something. My rheumy NEVER did a physical examination of my joints. At least the first rheumy I saw ten years ago did that!  All this last rheumy did was look at my hands.  He never even asked me how much pain I was in or what joints were hurting.  What in the world was I thinking?!? I guess I was just so desperate for help with the pain that I overlooked his lack of "doctoring".  My NP did a more thorough exam of my joints than Dr. J did.  I am happy you have made this decision, Rena.  Please let us know how you are doing.  I hope you find a good doc soon!

Peace,

V

Hey V.  Drug seeking...are you kidding.  Who would ever seak RA medications if they did not really need them.  They are not fun.  Do these Dr.'s think we enjoy this?  I too, was desperate for some one to help me with the pain.  I wanted my life back and to be able to function like I used to.  I thought that my hands must hold some magic key for my Rheumy.  But then it dawned on me that how could he possibly remember what every patients hands looked like from visit to visit.  Duh!  What was I thinking? Undecided

Do you still see Rheumy #2 or have you moved on?  This is Rheumy #1 for me.  Take care of You and thanks again for commenting.

Hi, Rena,

I have moved on from Rheumy #2. Wink

I am letting my orhto treat me at the moment.  We are doing some tests...MRIs, etc.  He says if I need to see a rheumy, he is going to send me to one at the University in Columbia, MO.  Lene said that would be a good choice.  She says University docs are usually more up to date on meds and just better in general.

I wish the best for your Rena.  "No More Suffering" is my new mantra.  None of us should have to suffer the way we do when docs don't take us seriously. We all get so desperate for relife that we ignore the warning signs of bad docs.  No more, right Rena?!?

Blessings,

V

You are absolutely right V!  No more suffering!  That is good information about the universities.  I am going to check into that.  I could travel/road trip if I needed to.  That Lene is the best, isn't she?

I was born and raised in Missouri.  Hope you all are getting some better weather there today.  You have been having some terrible storms and tornados around your area.  Have a great day V.  Feel Good Girl!  Smile

Hi, Rena,

Yes, Lene is the best.  She's my hero!Smile

Where in Missouri did you live, Rena?  Where were you born?  I was born on Staten Island in NY, but my husband is a Missouri boy. We met in college, and the rest is history, I guess.  We still enjoy each others company after almost 34 years. We have been blessed.  Our anniversary is this month.

I have lived in MO since I was 17 years old, so I think I am a naturalized Missourian now. LOL

Have a great weekend, sweet girl!

I was born in Carthage, MO and grew up in a small town called Sarcoxie just a few miles from Carthage.  My mother and father still live there.  I have two brothers.  One lives in Monett, MO and the other lives in Diamond, MO.  I bet you are already mowing your yard therem huh?  We have just gotten rid of all the snow on the ground here in Idaho and the grass is beginning to turn green, finally.

Congratulations on 34 Years!!!  That is fantastic.  He must be a great guy too.  We already know he has a great catch!!! Wink  Hope you have some fun plans to celebrate your 34 years.  How wonderful, my friend.

So how did you end up in Idaho, Missouri girl?  Laughing

I live in North Central Missouri...not as pretty as down south, where you grew up, but we like here.  We mow five acres, and it needs mowed, but we haven't been able to get to it.  It has been raining here for days.

I have only seen pictures of Idaho, Rena.  It looks beautiful.

I hope we both get some warm temps and sunshine..........SOON!!!

Have a great weekend,

I used to travel for my work and then after years of that, I got tired of traveling and landed at the INL-Idaho National Laboratory and have been here for almost 12 years now.  I loved Idaho because the summers here are great.  The temp's stay in the 80's and we don't have the humidity like MO.  Plus...I can tromp around camping and fishing without having to worry about ticks and chiggers!  That is really nice.  My family loves to come out and visit me in the summer and get out of that MO heat.  Plus I have learned how to snowmobile. Since we get some really long winters here.  I love it.

I saw the weather.  Hope you did not get any bad weather there in MO.  Be safe!

I really do miss MO though.  My favorite time there is in the fall.  It is beautiful.  I grew up about 1.5 hours drive from Branson.  I love to go to Silver Dollar City in the fall and during ghe Christmas holiday season.  It's making me home sick just typing about it.

Yes, Rena.  The Ozarks are beautiful in the fall.  When July rolls around and I am stuck in this humid MO heat, I will be thinking of you cool and dry up in Idaho, my friend.  Laughing  Eighty is about perfect in my book.  No ticks and  chiggers...really...???  That is a wonderful thing!  I've always wanted to try driving a snowmobile, but I'd probably wrap myself around a tree. LOL  I'm still getting used to my Arctic Cat...Her name is Molly, and she is red. I have a tendency to name things that are special to me.  I just got back from church.  My husband and I teach the class for people joining the church.  Today is a very special day and I am looking forward to the celebration this evening.  I came home to take a nap so that I can make it through the service tonight.  It starts at 8:30.  That is late for me.  I'm usually in bed by ten. LOL

Have a wonderful weekend, Rena.

your rheumatologist still makes me shake my head. Well, want to bang my head against the wall. Find yourself another one ASAP, sweetie - you need to protect your future.

4/15/11 3:24am

Thanks Lene.  I'm working on it.  If we do not protect ourselves, who will?  We have to stick together and learn as much as we can from each other and this site.  I have learned so much from you Lene...I can't ever thank you enough.  The knowledge I have gained here has been priceless and I have just begun to scratch the surface of all that I can learn here!  Knowledge is power!

Be healthy and happy my friend!  Smile

Thanks so much Lene.  This community is a life saver for me.  I feel so fortunate that it is here.  It is an island of information, help and support for all of us of out here adrift in the world.

Have a wondeful weekend.  Hope you are getting some good weather and can get out and soak up some sunshine!
