Traveling with Rheumatoid Arthritis: You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide

By Leslie Rott, Health Guide Thursday, July 14, 2011
I’ve been traveling for dissertation research, so I’ve been absent here and on my blog. I’ve been quite busy. And I wanted to leave RA in the dust. I wanted to travel on a relentless schedule and come home feeling fabulous.   Wishful thinking? I think so…   Because ...

I've always pushed myself too hard and only within the last year, started to respect my boundaries a bit more - much to my surprise, it actually made me feel better and in the long run, enable me to do more overall because I didn't have to waste time healing for three days or a week on a regular basis. And then there were April-June where I completely ignored any limits I might have in preparing for Awareness Month, doing Awareness Month and catching up after Awareness Month. It's truly amazing what you can get done when you're high on adrenaline.

Went on vacation and on the very first day, I got sick. Spent my entire two weeks off being sick and I still don't have my normal energy levels. Don't be like me. Manage your energy, get proper rest, don't ignore your meds and when your body pleads with you to stop, even just for a day, listen to it. Otherwise, it's gonna make you sit still, probably while calling you vicious names and it might choose a really horrible time for it.

Leslie,

You keep going on that dissertation!!  I had just become ABD when live threw some really nasty years in my direction.  Then the MS hit, followed by RA.  I ended up allowing my dissertation years to time-out.  No matter what anybody says, you know if you can do this...and I believe you can.  :)

You last month sounds a little bit like mine (except for the dissertation research).  I spent a couple of days in DC, then Chicago, then NYC, then Oklahoma, then Seattle, and a cruise to Alaska...all followed by 2.5 days at the JA Conference outside DC.  I just started feeling almost rested yesterday.

Take your time.  Don't fret about keeping up with the blogs.  We will be here whenever you drop by.

Hi, Leslie,

I am so impressed.  I wouldn't have been able to do anything after a four hour plane ride. I went on a day trip with my husband last weekend and we had a 2 and a half hour drive there and 2 and a half hour drive back. I rested Sunday, and on Monday I could only work half a day.  I think you are doing very well.  Try to listen to you body, though, and rest when you really need to rest.
