Resolutions for 2015

Leslie Rott Health Guide
  • I have a problem with New Year’s resolutions.

I’m a perfectionist, and I’m afraid to fail.  So rather than fail myself, I just don’t really make resolutions.

That doesn’t mean I lack motivation or ambition.

There are plenty of things I want to do in 2015:

    -          Find an apartment and move

    -          Get a job

    -          Write my book

    -          Finish my master’s degree

And I guess I have New Year’s resolutions, which I guess I have to follow through on since I’m listing them here:

    -          Get better at saving money

    -          Work on eating healthier and working out more – this probably sounds generic, like that’s on everyone’s resolution list.  But for me, it’s serious.  I’ve hit a wall when it comes to both eating healthy and working out.  It’s hard when I am working four days a week and going to school one day a week and, thanks to lupus and RA, am totally exhausted all the time.

I think RA also makes it hard to make (and keep) resolutions.  It’s such an unpredictable disease, and you never know exactly how you’re going to feel.

I know many of us struggle with planning for tomorrow or next week.  So how can we make predictions about what we will and won’t be able to do in the year to come?

Some might say that looking at it like that is limiting.  But it’s also about being realistic.  Both when it comes to our health and when it comes to our life.

Then again, it is also about having hope.  We have to hope that this coming year will be better, that RA will be kept in check, that current medications will continue to work or new ones will make us feel better.

We have to be optimistic while being realistic.  And I guess in some ways, that’s the point of New Year’s resolutions. It’s important to plan, but also important to be okay with wavering from that plan.

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? If so, what are your resolutions for 2015? If not, why not?
