I'M JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS EXPERIENCED REALLY BAD CANKER SORES WHILE ON THE DRUGE ORENCIA? I STARTED THIS NEW DRUG 6 MONTHS. THE LAST 3 1/2 I'VE BEEN HAVING BAD BOUTS OF CANKER SORES. I KNOW CANKER SORES ARE AUTOIMMUNE BUT I'M WONDERING IF ANYONE ELSE HAS HAD THEM?

I have been on Orencia for about 14 months now. As other mentioned I have awful canker sores. I asked my rheumatologist and he was not aware of that side effect. No other drug to date has done this to me. I do not take Methotrexate because I like to still enjoy a drink so I have avoided that druge. I am only mentioning this because I saw that some people thought the cause may be from that drug but I am not on it and have the same issue. In the past I would get a canker sore once in awhile but about a month or so after taking Orencia I got a couple in my mouth and since then it kept getting worse. Now it is common to get 5-7 at a time and then have a couple weeks free from them and then they return. I hate to switch drugs since the Orencia really works well but the mouth sores are so painful.
I had almost constant mouth sores while on Orencia. They were inside my mouth and down my throat. I tried Valtrex and almost all other remedies which did not work. Finally I was put on Prednisone dose pack and then 10 mg prednisone which did keep them at bay. I am off Orencia because of the problem.

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with canker sores, I know how painful those can be. And while I have not heard from anyone on Orencia having these problems, it doesn't mean that they don't. That being said, I do know that one of the side effects of methotrexate is painful mouth sores or mouth ulcers. Have you recently started methotrexate or had a change in the dosage. Have you had to skip a dose? Now if you don't take methotrexate it very well could be the Orencia. Either way you need to let your rheumatologist know about these side effects. Even a quick call to the office can take care of the problem, as he may just need to adjust some things. I hope you find relief from the canker sores soon! Good luck and best wishes!
I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis. I take Methotexrate & Humira. I get canker sores in my mouth from the Methotexrate. Apparently the drug depletes my system of needed folic acid, which causes canker sores. My doctor prescribes me 10mg of a Folic Acid pill a day. When i skip those, I get canker sores. Eating yogurt & rinsing your mouth with salt water will help speed their healing time. You should talk to your doctor about it. Good luck! Feel Good!
I also get canker sores and take Orencia. I've been taking it for about 2 years and getting better as far as the RA is concerned, but over the past 4-6 months have had a terrible time with mouth sores. My doctor took me off Methotrexate which has the side effect of mouth sores. It hasn't helped. I do take folic acid daily, but just 1 milligram. I'm thinking of asking to up the dose. I have been on Orencia for almost 2 years and for the past 4-5 months have started to develop canker sores in mouth and on tongue that are very painful. I have also started to develop UTI's monthly and am considering stopping the Orencia.
I too have had canker sores in my mouth. I bit inside my cheek and after 3 weeks of not healing I had to be put on Keflex. After 7 days my mouut was healing. I have been on Orencia for almost 3 years. The drug is fantastic. But understand that some of us do get mouth sores, throat infections, sinus infections. Why are doctors refusing to understand that if you mess with your immune system there will be consequences! ! My Primary Care doc does know that as long as I am on this medicine this will continue to happen. I absolutely love what the medicine has done for me, BUT there are some problems for some of us! ! I no longer take metotrexate, or steroids or any other drugs that can be blamed for these side effects. I have read about simular problems with other people. So you are not alone.
