what a wonderfully useful post, Lisa!

I take my unused medications to my pharmacist and ask him to dispose of them properly, which includes the labeled pill containers. Although you can apparently "safely" dispose of medications in household garbage - really? - I would prefer not to. I've read stories about e.g., the high-level antibiotics in our water because people flush their meds and would like to believe that a pharmacist has a more appropriate and safer way of disposal that is kinder to the earth.

Thanks for the disposal information.  I just recently heard of new info. from Missouri about not disposing of prescription medications in the toilet due to these medications finding their way into the water table and contaminating the water supply.  We really do need to be concious about where our old, discontinued and used medications and containers go.
