Five Kitchen Tools to Make Cooking Easier

By Lisa Emrich, Health Guide Monday, July 06, 2009
With the intent to improve my diet in recent months, I’ve been spending more time in the kitchen.  Trust me, I’m no chef, but I can follow a recipe.  I even own a Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook.  Even before my rheumatoid arthritis was diagnosed, I had started purchasing...

A breadknife with the handle attached at a 90 degree angle - infinitely easier to use than the regular versions.

Thanks for all the great tips!

I love the Oxo stuff (easy to grip), and now I have to find those other gadgets! -Joan

I keep a small needle-nose plyer (purchased at a craft store) in my kitchen.  I use this for remove tops of cans having the pull tab, removing the inner seal of a milk carton.  Also comes in handy to open food boxes with pull tabs.  I would say I use this device at least once a day, many days more than that.

Swedish fork knives are wonderful. I have finger/wrist/ and shoulder problems RA/OA/ and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome-hypermobile joints(aka double jointedness).

Also like eating utensils with 1+ inch diameter handles, and the "food end" can bent to help keep the wrist straighter while eating.

I love the OXO utensils too.

I have a set of Ulu knives  that a friend got me for Christmas one year. I use mine for every thing, even cut steak up, just because it gives me better leverage and less strain on my fingers and wrists.

Thank you so much for sharing. I cannot tell you how many times I have opted for a less nutritious and delicious meal because of the pain befor during and after the preparation. Potatos especially. I guess the pALM PEELER WOULD WORK WELL ON CABBAGE?

Hey Lisa,

Good article. Funny how everything is too "heavy" all of the sudden. :P

Much of my cool kitchen stuff had to go bye-bye.

Anyway, my best kitchen friend (other than my awesome kids!) is the mini processor. I don't cut anymore except very roughly, so this is my most used tool.

Thanks for your article, I have to confess to using the ultimate kitchen helper, I don't cook he he. Sometimes friends cook for me, but there are great and fairly cheap meals available locally. Cooking is just too hard for me even with good devicesInnocent
