Recent Surgery for Occipital Neuralgia

By Chloe Miller Tuesday, March 22, 2011

Hello Everyone,

I recently had two surgeries for occipital neuralgia and wondered if there were any others here who suffer from Occipital neuralgia or who have had this wonderful new surgery that I could connect with.

I suffered severe Occipital Neuralgia and had right and left occipital nerve release surgery in 2010. by Dr. Robert Bray Jr. of D.I.S.C Marina Del Rey CA

Before surgery I was in agony. I would throw up almost daily from the severe dizziness. I was mostly bedbound curled up in the fetal position wishing I had the courage to kill myself. If I didn't take a cocktail of antiseizure, opiates and muscle relaxers I suffered hundreds of electric shock type pains per day in my head and had a constant migraine type pain 24/7 from july 2008. Each time my heart beat my head throbbed and the slightest noise made the nerves in my head HURT.  I couldn't socialize like go to small dinners or even shopping as the sound sensitivity was so severe I would last only a few minutes before going back to my dark "cave" to recover for at least 8 hours.  I lived in my house isolated and in silence. Luckily I had a wonderful husband who spent all his after work hours helping me cope.

During the surgery it was found that the artery that runs beside the greater and lesser occipital nerve had wrapped around them and curled them into a tight mass that throbbed every time my heart beat.  After surgery my headache and dizziness and nausea immediately disappeared, however, it takes the nerves about 8 months to stop being hypersensitive.

There are more and more doctors doing this surgery in the United States that I know of including Dr. Ivica Ducic in DC, Dr. Perry in Texas, Dr. Guyuron in Ohio, Dr.  Ziv Peled in San Francisco, and Dr. Robert Bray Jr.  in Marina Del Rey. Dr Kayvan Khiabani Las Vegas and Dr. Fadi Nukta in MA.

Now I feel I must help others with this debilitating illness. I have spent my recovery time spreading my info to help other sufferers find relief. I have made a website listing all the relevent knew information on occipital neuralgia including recent published studies on surgery and medications etc. because I found that most websties paste info about occipital neuralgia that came from the 1960's  I wished more migraine pages would include occpital neuralgia because I know people need more information on this debillitating, life changing syndrome.

I had to look upoccipital neuralgia to find out what it was! I'm very glad to hear that your surgery brought such positive changes.

This site specializes in rheumatoid arthritis, but we do have a Migraine site that may be more appropriate for what you looking to do.

best of luck in your future!

no need to delete the post. Who knows, there might be somebody on the site who would benefit from it.

You mentioned you're having trouble navigating the site - can I help with anything?

I have occipital neuralgia. Dr. said that my joints are swollen (from RA) and it's causing pressure on my nerves. I also had whiplash from a car accident. I'm glad you posted here, bc now I'm curious about your surgery!! Nothing is helping this awful neck pain. What can I do!?
