Is it normal?

By Ching Chan Friday, July 17, 2009

So I've been on my meds for two to three months now, and I do feel a difference. I can now get out of bed in the morning. I don't have as much trouble walking. I can walk up and down stairs. And I don't have trouble bending my knees.

The only thing that worries me is my finger. The same one that bothered me in my last entry has been bothering me a lot lately. The pain prevents me from falling into a deep sleep and usually wakes me up in the morning. It hurts when I bend my finger, but it also hurts when I straighten my finger. The joint connecting my pointer finger to my palm is usually swollen and pulsates with pain throughout the day. At night, shooting pain radiates to the rest of my hand. Is this normal?? I mean, the rest of my body seems to be responding well to my meds, so why does my finger seem to be the only stubborn part that doesn't respond?

Hi, be glad you're responding well to the meds. I'm not yet, and I hate being on methlprednizone. I also have chronic pain in my pointer finger that I doubt will ever go away because it all started there and I think it's here to stay. But when it feels so painful, I actually splint it just to give it a rest and me. I thnik it helps temporarily, and I'll take anything. What meds are you on? I'm on MTX, plaquenil, folic acid, fish oil, multi vitamin, tramadol(for pain as needed) and methlprednizone. And I still feel bad most of the time. Somethings always hurting me somewhere. I'm waiting, waiting for my meds to work. I also have wrist/hand gloves that I wear sometimes for added support. I also try hand exercises to help.

I hope this helps you.-Michelle

I think it's pretty normal to have a joint or two doing that sort of "canary in the mine". Personally, every time I go into a flare, it starts in the bottom joint of my left big toe, so maybe that's what's happening with you.  Methotrexate usually takes about 6-8 weeks to really kick in, so maybe you're right on the verge of having everything work.  I'd suggest giving it another week or so and if that joint is still giving you trouble, call you rheumatologist. You may need to increase your dose just a little bit to give it the final tip into working.  you can also consider a small dose of prednisone - often, prednisone can work as a sort of booster to other DMARDs, taking them from working well to working great.

I have been taking Enbrel for 5 years and I was doing just fine without any symtoms of RA until I noticed my muscle was weakening and so I told my doctor and asked me to stop taking Enbrel.

What a mistake! I was having every joint problems with severe pain.

Of course I went back to Enbrel with prednison, clebrex, methotraxate.

These treatment was on going for about 5months now and I have pain and swollen of my knees and especially my right index finger, just like yours.

I don't take methotraxate because I don't want to lose my hair and prednison usualy works for me but now I don't have insurance to cover my med and doctors visit...

I don't know if I want to take celebrex when I am in moderate conditions like I can move and get up in the morning without having a painful stiffness but I do have my fingers are sore and a little pain there when I am not even moving.

Ching Chan, I think we do have simular situations as an asian. I am trying to take only Enbrel to stablize my symtoms hopefully without taking any others might increasing high risk of death not related to RA.

Thanks for reading.
