The Month Ahead: RA Awareness and Action

  • This is your month. Our month. This is Arthritis Awareness Month. And do we ever have great things planned...

Our first great thing is a contest! Not only does it give you an opportunity to win one of three Visa gift cards, but at the end of the month it will also be something very important. In this contest, we ask you to come up with ideas for small, medium and big things we can do to raise awareness of RA. We'll put it all together and when we announce the winners, we will also present your ideas as a blueprint for change. This is something we'll all be able to use and take out their in the world to help change it for the better. The contest is open until May 31, 2012. Please enter and tell all your friends about it, as well!

Our next great thing is content. Every month, our team brings you high quality content about RA and how to live with it. This month, we are upping the ante and pushing harder to help you take action to get healthier, cope better and connect to others who live with this disease.

RA is hard on your joints, but it can also affect other systems in your body. One of these systems is your heart - RA comes with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. V is going to take a look at what you can do to prevent heart disease. Living with RA can also impact your mood and Lisa will tell us about a new study about the connection between RA and anxiety. To help you deal with anxiety, Chad is going to write about strategies for positive mental health and well-being.

Having a four-legged creature in your house is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and some warmth in your heart. In honor of National Pet Month, Brad will write about pets and how they can be an invaluable part of helping you cope with your disease and life in general. Pets can also be an important part of helping you stay active, but there are many other options available for people of varying levels of ability. Lisa will look at what you can do to keep your body moving.

Kids certainly help keep you going and parenting can be a challenge when you live with a chronic illness. Mother's Day is just around the corner and Cathy will write about being a mom with RA.

In addition to marking Arthritis Awareness Month, May is also Lupus Awareness Month. Leslie will write a post about lupus to help us understand more about this complicated autoimmune disease. She will also write about awareness walks.

My topics for this month will focus on different aspects of advocacy. I'll be taking a look at what The Arthritis Foundation is doing to advocate for all of us. I'll also write about what individuals within the RA community are doing on a grassroots level.

We look forward to celebration Arthritis Awareness Month with all of you! Don't forget to enter the contest!
