World Arthritis Day 2014 – Vision 2043 Competition and a Thunderclap

  • People living with various kinds of arthritis participate in their local or national awareness events at different times. For instance, the US marks Arthritis Awareness Month in May, Canada in September, and in the UK, it’s in October. But there is one day in the year when we celebrate globally and that’s World Arthritis Day on October 12, this coming Sunday.

World Arthritis Day was established in 1996 by Arthritis and Rheumatism International. It aims to raise awareness of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs), to influence public policy, and make sure that people living with RMDs and the people who love them are aware of the support networks that are available.

Every year, World Arthritis Day plans something special and this year is no exception.

    Vision 2043

In the past few months, the World Arthritis Day organization has held a competition called Vision 2043. It looks forward to a future where living with RMDs is easier than today.

The competition asked people around the world to think of one thing that would make the day-to-day living with arthritis easier. Suggested categories ranged from the built environment, to employment, and life enhancements, as well as an “Open” category. They received numerous entries, and although voting is now closed, you can still view all the entries on the Vision 2043 Competition Gallery website. They make for inspiring viewing!

A European and a Global winner were selected and will be announced this Sunday. Concepts receiving Runner-Up or Commendations will also be displayed.

    Sign Up for the Thunderclap

What is a Thunderclap? It’s a mass posting of a prewritten message on social media, all set to automatically publish at the same time. If a lot of people participate, social media will resonate with a message to raise awareness about arthritis.

You can participate in the World Arthritis Day Thunderclap If you use Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr. Signing up is simple. Go to the World Arthritis Day Thunderclap page and follow the directions. The app takes care of the rest, publishing your message at 12 PM GMT (that’s 7 AM ET).

You can also help increase the number of people who participate in this Sunday’s Thunderclap. The World Arthritis Day organization has provided two template messages that you can use or you can of course make up your own.

The template messages are as follows:

    • #worldarthritisday is holding a thunderclap to raise awareness of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). Please show your support, sign up to the thunderclap now http://thndr.it/1CIzFcd
    • Join us in supporting the #worldarthritisday thunderclap to raise awareness of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). Please sign up now and help us make our voices heard http://thndr.it/1CIzFcd

What will you do to raise awareness on World Arthritis Day?
