multiple myeloma and ra

By debbie Tuesday, September 11, 2007

I was diagnosed with RA at 33 and I'm now 45. The last few years thank god I have had what I would consider a minor remission(sedement rate 3, ra factor 260) however a few months ago I awoke with all over muscle pain or what I thought was muscle pain and when it didn't go away in 6 weeks I went to see my rhumatologist and he ran some blood work which came back with lamba and kappa light chain and the lab suggested followup.  I had a bone scan and a skeleton scan which both showed no signs of myleoma, however the blood is still showing kappa and lamba and the pain is still with me.(pain does not feel like ra).

My question is...Has anyone ever heard of people with RA being more prone to certain cancers, especially myeloma.

thanks and any help would be appreciated.

Dear Debbie,

Thank you for submitting a SharePost. This is a very important and timely question.

One of our site experts, Christine Miller, just wrote a relevant Blog about a new study linking TNF inhibitors with an increased risk of developing skin cancer.

Christine also wrote an earlier Blog about the potential serious side effects associated with new Rheumatoid Arthritis treatments.

Additionally, our site has information about the many different drugs used to treat RA and their potential side effects.

Please check out the Rheumatoid Arthritis discussion forum where there have been quite a few conversations about the RA drug side effects.

I hope you find this useful and please let me know if I can help you find anything else on our site.

Best,

Katherine

Thanks Katherine for responding so quickly, however aside from over the counter anti-

Iinflamatories the last time I was on something for my RA was two years ago and that was methodrexate and celebrex but with high liver counts I opted to go off all RA medications.

I did read Christine Millers information on the potential side effects of certain drugs and cancer but I don't know if that would apply to me at this point.

Thanks
