Painful swollen feet and purpulish swollen toes

adabel Community Member March 22, 2008
  • Hi,

I am 36 yrs old and for the past yr I have been experiencing pain on the ball of both of my feet. I could feel a ball on the bottom of the foot and the foot (both) will be swollen. I noticed that the 2nd, 3rd and 4th toe started to hurt and they were swollen as well. The have shifted and looks purplelish. There are days that I do not have pain and there are others that I can not walk. I take aleve and that seems to help. I went to the Dr and he thought it could be rheumatoid arthritis but the test came back negative. The test does show that I have some sort of inflamation. What could it be?

Adebel,  I am sorry you are having so much pain and inflammation in your feet.  I have had RA for over 13 years and I have the exact same symtpoms as you in my feet.  Some days I can barely walk because it feels like every bone in my feet is broken, and they are constantly swollen.  Do you know what tests your doctor ran, and what he thinks...

Adebel,  I am sorry you are having so much pain and inflammation in your feet.  I have had RA for over 13 years and I have the exact same symtpoms as you in my feet.  Some days I can barely walk because it feels like every bone in my feet is broken, and they are constantly swollen.  Do you know what tests your doctor ran, and what he thinks may be going on with you?  I guess the problem is that it could be RA even though the tests are negative, but it also could be a variety of other things.  Do you have any swelling or pain anywhere else or fatigue.  And if so, have you told your doctor your complete list of symtpoms.  I have done a little research for you and this is what I have come up with:

    http://arthritis.about.com/od/rheumatoidarthritis/p/rheumatoidfacts.htm

This site tells a little about RA, but it also states that 20% of people with RA don't test positive for the Rheumatoid Factor which is a big diagnostic test for RA.

    http://www.healthcentral.com/rheumatoid-arthritis/guide-154723-75.html

This is a health central site that talks about Raynauds Phenomenon which happens quite often in people with Rheumatoid Arthritis and sounds like it might explain the purplelish look.

Pleas keep us updated on what you find out and how you are doing.  I hope some of this helps.  Also feel free to gripe, vent, or just ask questions.  We are all here for you whenever you need us.  Good luck on your journey for a diagnosis.  Best wishes!

I cannot stress enough to make sure that you get throid tests regularly. Also, a good full spectrum mineral formula like BONE UP, and add extra magnesium.

I had the same about 4 years ago-got tested and either it was going to be lupus or RA-turned out to be RA based upon symptons and blood test (sedimentation rate); pills, pills, pills, and then Humira-Thank Goodness for Humira-I had lost all hope of enjoying life and actually walking again; it has changed my life to the point that I only get a few aches once...

Morton's Neuroma, painful swelling of the nerve in the foot that goes between the toes.  This nerve becomes pinched between the bones of the foot and gets larger and more painful as time goes on.  It is in effect a pinched nerve... and it HURTS like the devil... I was not able to put a shoe on for years...  I did have the surgery to snip the nerve which works sometimes, the nerve snaps back and gets buried in the foot again,,, other times it doesn't do that and forms a stump on the end and gets repinched.  After talking to several surgeons about another surgery they advised me to not have it done because of further damage to the nerve, I still had the pain.  My General Prac. Doctor subscribed Nortripyline which is a night time antidepressant,,, it makes the nerves go to sleep (my description) and in the morning they are rested and not as inflamed,,,which over time helps to get you walking and moving (I even LINE DANCED with cowboy boots) which gets rid of the scar tissue ....  another fabulous help was Berkinstock shoes,,,they separate the toes and give the nerve ROOM....

OH by the way,,, I had it equally in both feet.....  I hope this helps you, I know how frustrating it is to not know what it is.... much less what to do for it....

    Happy Feet again~

I agree, I had Morton's Neuroma with exactly the same symptoms.  Most of the symptoms were relieved after having the nerve cut.  Not perfect, I needed a steroid injection six months after the surgery and still have an immobile toe joint, but the ball of the foot is fine.

Have you had an x-ray on your feet.  My sister had the same problem and she has a bone that is sticking out in her heel that causes her pain every now and again.  The doctor at the hospital said they do not do surgery to correct it, its just something she has to live with.  She is trying to find out if she can have surgery to correct the problem. ...

I have seen my physician twice -- his solution was not getting to the root of th problem but suggested I increase my water pill dosing to one or two more a day as need and wear teds.....I WANT TO KNOW THE CAUSE.  I have also noticed my 3rd and 4th toe appear swollen and seem tender to touch and at times if feel a ball on the ball of my foot.   I also noticed I can't seem to separate my 3rd toe from my 2nd toe.  Sounds silly but I'm putting my feet up every night and there seems to me a tightens around my ankle which is swollen as well.   I can't believe my symptom is this unusual.  My Physician has also taken two blood screens  and ruled out any heart related problems at this point (good thing);  I don't have a thyroid problem, sugar or excessive salt intake problem, blood pressure excellent, cholosteral great, and no issues being diabetic.

Have they taken an Xray of your foot? There is something called a Charcot foot that presents like yours. Do some research about it. Ask your doc about it too. I learned recently that a lot of radiologists/doctors can misread the xray, so make sure you get at least a second opinion. They may have to do a bone scan to really make a final decision. I hope you...
