By Brad, Health Guide Thursday, April 21, 2011
Hey guys and gals, I have always been an avid reader, until about two years ago when it became too  painful to hold a book or try and pin it to a lapdesk. I recently got a Kindle from Amazon.com. WOW!!!! Its so light and easy to use, I am all over reading again! Plus you can get tons and tons o...

Hi, Brad!

I have been wondering about Kindles. I, too, have a problem holding a book from time to time, and I absolutely love to read.  Nice to hear the Kindle is lightweight.  Are they easy to read, even if you are outside?

Thanks!

Hi V,

I researched the E readers quite a bit, and the kindle seems to be the best, hands down. It uses something called electronic Ink, realy ink that is placed electronically, you would swear you are looking at a real page of paper. You can read it easily in even bright sunlight. The entire thing weighs like 8 oz! I really like it!

so glad you found something that can help you continue reading!

I might have problems reading on an ebook reader like this because in addition to the difficulty holding something, I have problems bending my neck. However, several years ago a friend gave me a membership to Audible, I got myself an iPod and have been reading audio books since. It's a terrific experience and when you combine a good book with a good narrator, it takes it's into a completely different level. You may also want to try that.

thanks for the tip!

Hi Lene!

Thats one reason I got the Kindle, you can run Audio books over it, or it will even read the text of a downloaded book for you! :)

Hope your doing good! :)

Audio books are human, text to speech is computer, but it sounds pretty good, tried it the other day! :)

Thanks Brad and Lene for your comments.  I too have problems holding books without pain and due to strength issues as well, even small paperbacks if they are thick, so I appreciated the tip.  We have an iPad but it's too heavy for holding.  I was debating about Kindle versus the Barnes and Noble "Nook,"  which comes in a color version.  I was leaning towards the Kindle, since it's more of a mainstream product.  My problem is most of the books I'm interested in are not in a Kindle version, so I've been holding off.

For $139 on Amazon, here are all of the goodies you get with the Kindle:

  • All-New, High-Contrast E Ink Screen- 50% better contrast with latest E Ink Pearl technology
  • Read in Bright Sunlight- No glare
  • New and Improved Fonts- New crisper, darker fonts
  • New Sleek Design- 21% smaller body while keeping the same 6" size reading area
  • 17% Lighter- Only 8.5 ounces, weighs less than a paperback
  • Battery Life of Up to One Month- A single charge lasts up to one month with wireless off
  • Double the Storage- Up to 3,500 books
  • Built-In Wi-Fi- Shop and download books in less than 60 seconds
  • 20% Faster Page Turns- Seamless reading
  • Enhanced PDF Reader- With dictionary lookup, notes, and highlights
  • New WebKit-Based Browser - Browse the web over Wi-Fi (experimental)

Mother's Day is coming up.... I should put this on my wish list. :)

Hmmmmmmmmmm.  I don't have any children.  I wonder if all the stray cats I have cared for, and still care for, count?  I even took care of a couple of stray dogs for 11 or 12 years. I think they should count as my children, don't you?  I may have to plant some hints around the house...I could  put a note on the fridge that says...Check Out Kindle On Amazon.....Looks Great!....Gee, I could really use this!

Do you all think that is subtle enough?  Wink

LOL  I wasn't very subtle, I'm afraid!  I had my laptop on Amazon, and said, "Look honey, Amazon has Kindles on sale for Mother's Day!  Want to see?"

Sigh. I am not a subtle person. Laughing

Very true! I just linked my Blackberry to my Kindle, if I am stuck somewhere without the Kindle, I can log into Amazon on my blackberry, and start reading the same page I was on on the Kindle!!! Amazing!
