Most people have heard about the holiday blues, but not many have heard of the holiday flares. For those of us with rheumatoid arthritis this time of year can be the beginning of very painful season. I am a 33 year old female diagnosed with RA about a year ago. I agree with everything that you said, and I actually own several Inflammation related books and I have taken very many natural supplements. I have tried to avoid taking the meds because they scare me. I took Methotrexate for 4 months but did not get any results and now my dr is pushing for Enbrel. I would like some advise. Is anyone reading this taking one of the Biologics and also trying to use natural remedies? I would love to talk to anyone who understands my dilema.

Thank you

I understand the fear, concern, and dislike of taking medication.  But for people with RA medication is the #1 way to prevent joint damage and manage pain.  It seems on a daily basis pain management is the main concern but please know joint damage is irreversable and will lead to much more daily pain than you have now.

From everything I have read, researched and talked to others about, the best known treatment to prevent or slow joint damage is a combination of methotrexate and one of the biologics (Enbrel, Remicade, Humira, Orencia).  I urge you to discuss the options with your doctor again and try one of the biologics to see if that helps.  Don't give up until you find a combination of things that work, they can include natural supplements and good nutrician, but those are not proven to prevent joint damage in RA patients.

I know, my mom was diagnosed when these treatments were not available and her hands and feet are horribly disfigured today and it is incredibly painful for her, even though she is on Enbrel and has been since it was in the trial phases.  When I was diagnosed I did not hesitate to take RA medications because I have seen first hand what happens without them - even though I previously would not even take a pill for a terrible headache.

Stephanie- I too was diagnosed with RA last year in March. I understand your concrns regarding medications. Initially I used anti-inflammitories, then prednisone (AWFUL!!!), then after my diagnosos I was put on a combination of anti-inflammitories and other meds, but I really got freaked out when I was prescribed methotrexate. I started looking into alternative therapies, like bee venom therapy. I had a neighbor who some yrs before had been incapacitated with some type of inflammatory arthritis, and she successfully treated it through bee venom therapy. I did not pursue this course for myself in the end. I was suffering such pain and disability, and as a single mom of a ten yr. old, I just gave in to the idea that I needed to pursue really aggressive theapy, and not "take chances". I took the methotrexate. Things got better, but I still wasn't doing terrific, so my Dr. put me on Enbrel. I take it in combination with methotrexate. I've been taking it for several months, and I definately feel better. I've been having a bit of a low level flare for awhile now, but there are incredible stresses in my life right now that are contributing to that. I'm thankful that I'm not where I was a year ago...unable to dress myself, comb my hair, walk down a flight of stairs. Giving yourself the injection isn't fun, but accepting that just helps to make it easier. I get the Enbrel directly from the drug company. Look into that if you don't have insurance that will cover it. Good luck.

I was almost 19 years old, a college student, filled with ambition and dreams. I remember exiting the Science Building at the university after one of my classes, on one particular day. My legs, especially my right knee, felt uncharacteristically weak and painful as I descended the stairs. This was the first day of a life-altering condition. The problem with my knee persisted over the next few weeks. I began my search for answers and medical care with my family Internist. He did the basic tests and diagnostics he could do, then fast-forwarded me to an Orthopedic Surgeon for a consultation. I had the doctors perplexed. I was seemingly too young to have arthritis, though my x-rays showed significant changes in my knee joints. This chronic diseases has ghastly taken over my mind emotionally mentally physically and financially. while goggling one day i found a website calledhttp://www.trumedcanada.com/index.aspx where i got my medicine at best priceshttp://www.trumedcanada.com/RX/Bonviva.Ibandronate.aspx now i have over taken my disease and i am happy leading my normal life.

Hi, this is Arthritis Super Mom's (Don't judge her, i picked her username) daughter. I am ten years old, and I am so worried about my mom I don't know what I'll do if they never find a cure. But something that really helped her was going on a no dairy diet-she felt great the week she did that. Tell me whatcha think.

Hi Cathee,

This is my first blog. Please be gentle. My name is Rose and I am a 55 year old female who was diagnosed 5 years ago with Rhuematoid Arthritis. I was doing pretty well on Remicade, methotrexate and prednisone. My life has changed drastically recently when a bone density revealed a T score of minus 4. I was taken off of prednisone and the last few infusions of Remicade don't seem to help. Also I am not able to take anti-inflammatory meds due to stomach problems. I was on Ultracet for pain then my Rhuematoligist took me off of that. She feels like if Remicade or other DMARD'S are working that I am not supposed to need pain meds AGGGG! The pain and fatigue have become almost unbearable. I too though am grateful for the loving support from my husaband. I would very much like to hear from you.
