Q: I have heard from one of my doctors that the ESR test is a bad test for inflammation

I have heard from one of my doctors that the ESR test is a bad test for inflammation. If that is case then why is that test used? My last ESR test was three times higher then it should be so that would make it in the 60's. From what I read 0-20 is normal for under 50 years old. Which I am still under 50. When I asked my Doctor about my ESR test she said it was 3 times higher then it should be but it is a horrible test anyway. I guess she did not do a c-reactive protein because she did not give me a test result for that and I guess not all Doctors run C-reactive protein. The last time it was run was last April of last year and 0.0-4.9 is normal mine was 7.7. my sed rate was 45 mm/l. Last July my Sed rate was 65 mm/l. So like I said my Doctor now says the sed rate test is a horrible test. If that is the case then why is it used?

Thank You
