really high ANA level with RA??
does anyone know if you can have RA diagnosis with a only slightly high RF level but a really high ana? WOuld this not mean that i have lupus instead? i am soo confused! thanks
Blood tests alone should not be viewed as a definitive diagnosis of RA or lupus - they're used (or should be used) more as another piece of the puzzle, possibly confirming a diagnosis of e.g., RA already made based on clinical symptoms, physical examination, etc. We have an excellent post on lab tests and what they mean and as you will see in that post, it is quite possible to have RA even with testing negative for RA factor - approximately 20% of people who live with RA are seronegative, which means their bloodwork doesn't show RA. However, it is also quite common for RA to play hide and seek in the beginning or you may have a mild case of RA. The best person to answer these questions is your rheumatologist - none of the people who answer questions here are doctors or experts in interpreting the results. Your rheumatologist is your hired expert and part of that job is to answer the questions you have so you feel informed about your disease. If you're having trouble pinning down your doctor, check out this post about self advocacy for tips. You may also consider getting a second opinion if you feel that would help you become less confused.
