Monday, March 14, 2011 Deezy asks

Q: I recently had surgery to fuse the end joint in my finger, but the surgeon fused the wrong joint - the middle joint which had no problems! The new surgeon thinks he can reverse this. Is this possible?

I really want to know as I am a guitarist and of course with that joint fused I am extremely limited. Also, surgeon no.1 said that fusion is not reversible, and that if I had an artificial joint it would only give me limited movement and I would not get the strength back. I need to be better informed before I take the leap!  The new surgeon is fusing the end joint next week, but he has said he wants me to wait until the end of the year to do the reversal.   Cheers ... I'm not a doctor and honestly don't know if a fusion can be reversed. I am, however, glad to hear you got a new surgeon.

I am normally not a litigious person, but given that the surgeon fused the wrong joint and the mpact it can have on your livelihood since you're a guitarist, I would suggest talking to a personal injury lawyer.

Thanks - yes I saw a lawyer last week and I have a very strong case.  I had the surgery I originally needed last Monday and all's well there.  So I am leaving things as they are for a few months and then I will discuss the implications of having some sort of reversal.

Thanks for your response!
