Q: Prednisone for Rheumatoid Arthritis patient with Diabetes

Dear Doctor,

My name is Jonathan and my mom,a diabetic has been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis a year ago.

It attacks her shoulders and knees. Her pain keeps her awake all night and the doctor had prescribed Diclofenac 75 mg(taken twice a day) & Prednisone 5 mg (taken once a day) .Prednisone really worked and ease her pain  until it put her blood sugar up and then the doctor ordered her to stop the Prednisone.

I was wondering if there is any alternative to Prednisone,a medication that works just like Prednisone which will not increase her sugar. Many thanks and have a great day!

Yours sincerely,

Jonathan

Those of us with questions in this section are not doctors, but people living with RA and we answer based on personal experience and whatever knowledge we've managed to pick up.  Some questions are best asked of a doctor and this is one of them - I simply don't know enough about how the medications interact with diabetes to give you any kind of solid advice.  however, I can give you some general information.

Prednisone is only one of many medications used to treat RA and it's a relatively mild treatment. I would recommend you and your mother do some research on DMARDs like methotrexate, Plaquenil, Arava and the Biologics (Enbrel, Humira, Remicade, etc.) and that your mom go back to her rheumatologist to discuss treatment options. It's important to get RA suppressed as soon as possible to protect the joints from permanent damage, but treatment can sometimes be complicated by other conditions, like diabetes.  I'd recommend that your mom speak to her diabetes doctor about connecting with the rheumatologist so they can discuss how best to treat her in a way that keeps the blood sugar regulated.

Unfortunately most RA drugs affect diabetes and raise blood sugar.

prednisone can also be taken if you have diabetes, just her diabetes has to be closely monitor, and and maybe increase dm med until she gets off steroids. I also have diabetes and on prednisone, but it helps me with my pain...but it does have lots of side of affects. so i try not to use so much , just if gets real bad then i take them.
