I am a 33 year old female. I have rheum. since the age of 14 years old and i have been on prednisone from then. It seems to put on weight on places you don't need it like my butt, abdomen and the worst part my face leaving my hands and ankle very skinny. I hope you get the picture what I am talking about. Any solutions.

Hi GB I took Prednisone for a while but stopped.  I call it the drug from Hell.  There are just too many side effects for me.  You can't stop the "moon face" etc without stopping the drug.  I refuse to take it.  I am on Humira which has really helped me a lot.  When I had a bad flare up recently, she gave me Depo Medrol (shot) in the hip. and that helped too.  I think it is a cortisone type drug as well, but no side effects that I know of.  Hope this has helped a bit.

Thanks for your input. I am very happyLaughing that i find a site where i can talk to others going through similar problems like mine. While going to school i felt so lonely and depressed because i didn't have anyone to share my problems with. It is so hard to explain to a healthy person what you are going through.

hi there, i'm 32 y.o. i've taken prednisone in the past 16 years for a total of 7+ years. @ first it gave me a moon face but that was because i was on a high dose. i.e 30+mg/day.  in the last 4 years, i moved to a new city. and had a bone density which showed that my bones were 55 y.o.  my new GP suggested i take extra calcium to rebuild my bone. i also started to take a Bisphosphonates.

Alendronate (Fosamax) is  used to help bone breakdown and preserve bone mass. These medications may also actually increase bone density in the spine and hip. However, they have not been fully tested in IBD patients with steroid induced osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates are currently the only class of drugs that are FDA approved for treating osteoporosis in men.

I'm not sure when this drug became available but i feel that i should have been taking FOSOMAX from the beginning of being prescribed PREDNIZONE.  i am so thankful to God for this miracle drug, but it's important to not over take it for too long. in the final 3 years of using prednizone, i was on just 5mg. and that did the trick to control the inflamation in my body.i even got pregnant & had 2 beautiful children. i'm now 2 years free of pharmaceuticals. i've had JRA since i was 16. i've now been using Cannabis for the last 10 years to ease my pain & give me more mobility. i thank God for Marijuana. it's given me a better quality of life. after doing a little online research, i learned that a UK phamaceutical company has researched Arthritis & Cannabis. they concluded that Marijuana is an enti-inflamatory & lowers the immune-system. thus, is beneficial to RA.

i hope this help! God bless :D
