Yes you can receive disability for having RA.  You're particular doctor can add documetation to support the evidence for your application but it is not your doctor's determination whether you will receive it.  The Social Security Administration will make that determination according to your specific case.

You can apply at any time, have all your medical records and history available.  They will ask about everything then they will pull all of your records to compare notes.

Applying for and receiving disability can take some time.  Anywhere from months to years depending on your case, your condition, and your location.  My fight took over a year and required a lawyer.

Good question, I was wondering also. It's so terrible how long it takes, and how some have to get lawyers. Good luck!

Yes, RA is actually on the list of prequalified illnesses.  But Social Security will make you prove that you have become unable to handle at least a part time job.

They denied me with the assumption that I could change my field of work from contruction and mechanics to an office environment part time.  They totally disregarded my hand xrays to see that my hands are twisted and I type with my pinkies.

I was told by my lawyer that it is SSDI works like a federal insurance company and it is their job to deny you claim first run in order to save them money.  EXCUSE ME. But it's my money!!!!

As long as you have all your ducks in a row and all your I's dotted and T's crossed, it can go smoothly.  Just takes forever.  Some people qualify within a month or two.  I just wasn't that lucky.

What causes your disability is less of a factor in determining whether you qualify for SSD than your level of disability. Check out my post on SSD for more information and links to resources that can help you increase the chances of being accepted.
