Q: methotrexate and ringing ears

I have been taking methotrexate for 3 years and my ears are always ringing and I'm sick of it.

Does any one take a med for ear ringing?

That can be a side effect. I had it too! Hated it. I ended up stopping it for a while because I knew this was the cause as did my doctor.

Sometimes they can add a tricyclic antidepressant to the mix, but you can get undesirable side effects from those as well. They tried an actual benzo with me, I just said take me off the MTX and this benzo and lets wait a while.

You could try acupuncture, my friend did and that helped, but it doesn't help everyone.

Those are a few suggestions. However it doesn't mean they are going to help in every case. If it's really taking it's toll, get off the MTX and try a different medicine. If you find no relief from a different medicine, than go back on the MTX and you might find like me, that the ear ringing doesn't come back. Just tell your doctor you are going insane with the ringing now. But I can relate!

Thank you.

Asked my rheumatologist and he told me to got to an ENT doctor...not much help.

Think I'll try my acupuncture man.

Again, thanks,

Please let us know what your ENT doctor says if you go. Most specialists want a run down of the medications you are taking anyway. Tell him about how you know MTX can cause this. If he can add something to the mix that would be great. But there's not a lot out there for ringing in the ears.

Print this out and bring it to your ENT if you decide to go. Circle the MTX on it. It's easier for the specialist to figure out the culprit when it's usually a drug causing it.
