I felt slightly better after about 6 weeks, a lot better after 3 months.  Its a slow acting drug.  Unfortunately it's not unusual for people to notice no improvement for months. What stinks about that is people usually feel the side effects immediately.  It can make it really difficult to endure when you feel like it makes you feel crappy and doesn't help anyway.  However, speaking from my experience, I am typing this right now which I couldn't have when I first began this jouney.  I've also experienced a huge reduction in side effects with each passing week.  My children had a normally active mommy these past few weekends.  Woo hoo!

However, some folks can't tolerate it, or need to switch to other meds or add other drugs to the regimen in addition to the meth.  It doesn't always work for everyone, so don't be afraid to voice your concerns to your physician either.  Good luck to you Lizzie!

Hello Lizzie,

When I started taking MXT it took I think about four to six weeks before I noticed any difference.  If you can tolerate this well, I would recommend it because I did wonders for me in regards to pain and swelling, i was like almost new again, but it made me too sick so I stopped taking it.  You'll see the difference and think it's a miracle drug, good luck !!

For me it took at least 6 weeks... But even then after 3 months they switched me to injections because the pills weren't doing it for me.  Are you on the pills or injections?  After I started the injections I started seeing results within 2 weeks.

Do you mean methotrexate injections or some other medication in the form of an injection?

Hi Lizzie,

It took me about 8 weeks before I noticed any real improvements from Mx. The doctors say 6-12 weeks. I had RA swelling on my left elbow that went completly away after about 8 weeks taking this; and I had much less pain in my shoulders and arms.

Unfortunately, my liver enzyme counts became too elevated with Mx, so I had to stop taking it after about 4 months. Your doctor should monitor this for you monthly (blood tests). Good luck and stay positive Smile

You should have noticed by now.  I was on it only about 2 weeks and I noticed a big difference.  I was taking the injections.  The longer I was on the drug the sicker I got, until I was throwing up.  It did wonders for my pain but it was hell on my stomach.  Needless to say I won't be taking it ever again.  I've been on quite a few different things over the past couple of years but I always end up with some severe side effects.  I'm only on enbrel right now but it's not doing much good.  I sure hope my rheumatologist finds something to help me real soo.  The pain and the fatigue are just too much.  Good Luck!

Hi Lizzie,

To answer your question, maybe never.  I have RA also the first round of meds my rheumy put me on was methotrexate when that didn't work she added Enbrel that also didn't work so now I am on Leflunomide and Remacade.  What a God send these meds have been for me.  When I go for my infusion I am in pain when I leave I have no more pain.  It took about a year of trying different things but I finally have found the right thing for me.  So don't get discouraged if the first thing doesn't work for you.  I'm sure your doctor will try some other treatment if the methotrexate doesn't work in a reasonable amount of time.Smile

Take care,

Janet
