Q: How do you combat the chronic fatigue?

I have RA and Osteo.  Just recently diagnosed with the beginnings of Lupus.  I've tried different medications but my RA doctor has now put me on meth and sulfalizine.  Am beginning to see wonderful signs of less pain but the fatigue is and has been tremendous and always present.  Is there anything I can do to get my energy back to normal or as close to normal as it can get?

the deseases are making you tired, but the meth is making it worse.  I didn't realize it until I stopped taking it.  While I was on meth I stated taking 2000iu of vitamin D it seems to really help with the exhaustion now and with the meth. Good luck to you.

I have RA and I too am taking Methotrexate (haven't been on it but a few months) and Sulfasalazine (I've been taking 2,000 mg daily for 9 months).  I still hurt and I'm sooooo exhausted.  So, I really can't tell you what to do about the fatigue.  I'm seriously contemplating a change to Enbrel or Humira.

Sorry I wasn't any help, maybe you'll find an answer soon.

I use Vit B complexs and a lot of it. I also recommended talking to you Dr about a Vit B 12 shot.(if you don't mind shots). I have RA and the fatigue is worst side effect for me. But these natural options help. As with all vitamins it take some time to work. Well the shot should be pretty quick.

Good luck

Absolutely a high potentcy B Complex vitamin - every day!!! Take it early in the day, so that the 'energy' effect wears off by bedtime. Also - look carefully for other things that might be adding to your fatigue - allergies, not enough GOOD sleep (treat the pain before bedtime to get a good nights sleep), things that hurt that have nothing to do with the illness. Above all, remember that pain itself causes fatigue - control the pain and lessen the fatigue. There's also what they call the pain/inflammation cycle - pain causes inflamation causes pain. You've got to break that cycle as well.

I discovered a wonderful topical spray, it's called TheraPain Plus - has MSM & Glucosamine, you can get it online at Reliefmart.com - it's fairly expensive, but lasts a long time. I keep one at home, one in my purse and one at work. It can be used as many times a day as you need. Not greasy, smells a little at first but that goes away. Just make sure you get the PLUS, the other is less expensive but does not have the MSM and Glucosamine.

I have RA and seem to be out here alone doing supplements and not taking anything to suppress my immune system. I would love to hear from anyone else who just takes an occasional anti inflammitory and controls RA without the meds.

For pain in the long muscles aka Fibromyalgia please try K-Mag by Source Naturals. It is magnesium and potassium aspartate. It get energy to the muscles and helps athletes with endurance. I took it as a fluke and it works every time and stops the muscle pains the same day. Only that brand seems to work. Metagenics makes Fibroplex for fibromyalgia but I have not tried it.

For the fatigue which I described as a "coma like fatigue", I used Gary Craigs EFT on myself and resolved it in about two weeks. You can download his course free from the internet. Or contact him to find a practioner who does EFT. You can read about it very easily. His newsletter says some books have been released that he has written too, so you may find a book about EFT  in the bookstore

I have been able to control the Joint pain with a minimum of supplements (initially I tried them all) and now function at a high level of activity.

I have RA now for two and a half years.

The winter before last I could not turn on my side in bed, could not scratch my head, could not use a can opener or knife, could function for about 3 hours and collapse exhausted. There was no muscle strength to push myself into a standing position. My ankles were turning in, and I shuffled when I walked. I could not fit into a pair of shoes that I owned and bought all new shoes. Birkenstocks are my favorite and they helped strengthen my feet. My feet are no longer swollen and my ankles are straight.
