Q: Question about dosage of Vitamin D

My doctor has tested my Vitamin D level and says it is very low (it is 7)  She has given me a prescription for 50,000 iu daily.  My pharmacist says this is way too much for a daily routine.  What do you think?

oops!  I meant to attach this too.  It's a bit techy, but helpful none the less.

I agree with your pharmacist....50,000 iu...I had vey low vit D level also and was told taking vit d was important however I take only 2,000 daily. 2 1,000 iu daily.  I have severe RA and have lived with it for over 15 years.  50,000 iu of would send up a red flag for me.  Good luck to you

My hubby is going through this very issue right now!  I too had my eyeballs bug out when I saw the 50,000 iu prescription.  So I did a bunch of research.  I learned that they give you the mondo dosage because simply giving you the normal recommended dosage doesn't kick up your overall levels. Think about having a big bowl of water and trying to maintain it at a certain level.  Except there is a crack in the bowl and you are losing a quart of water a day!  Now if you try to fill the bowl back up one tablespoon at a time, you simply never catch up.

Now my hubby is to take 50,000 iu two times a week and then go back for a recheck in 2 months.  If it has risen to an acceptable level he may go back to the normal recommended dosage. I also found out that it is fairly hard to OD on vitimin D.  Now you are certainly taking even more than he is and I'm no expert.  Still I have a great respect for pharmacists and even more respect for asking questions when it comes to your health.  Give your doc a call, or call another for a second opionion.  Asking doesn't hurt, not asking sometimes can.
