Q: I have pain in my knees, hips and feet along with a restlessness when I relax at night.

I have pain every night when I lay down along with restlessness. My hips also hurt to lay on them so I usually lay on my back to sleep. I have sleep apnia but have to sleep on my back due to pain in my hips. I work at a very physical job lifting, pulling, pushing weight around. Through the years I have fallen a few times and have had many back injuries which I have been abile to move past as long as I am careful but I am forced to take over the counter drugs to sleep at night and have trouble walking during the day due to stiffness and pain. Thank you for any help you might give.    Sincerely Janet A.

You might consider asking your doctor about restless leg syndrome if the restless is just in the legs and is uncontrolable.  If you are restless due to the pain, maybe a mild muscle relaxant would work.  Elevating the legs slightly on a thin pillow  or a pillow under your knees might ease the stress on the back.

Hi Janet, I have Fibromyalgia along with RA, and I go through exactly what you have described every night. I, too, have found that sleeping on my back is the only way to sleep. I expirience this pain throughout the day, but nights are the worst!Perhaps you can mention Fibromyalgia to your doctor and see what he/she thinks. Stacy Reply

I had this problem for months...then I began taking a magnesium supplement. It took a few nights, but then I was soooooo much better! Try a 2:1 magnesium:calcium. Most people take more calcium, but active people often are short in magnesium stores.  Also I upped my water intake. Good luck with this.
