I have pain like a sharp ache in both of my hands and the swelling is at the joint at the base of the 3rd and 4th fingers on both hands. no redness or warmth there, no fever but I am usually fatigued. the fatigue may be due to depression. i have tried ibuprophen and prescription naproxin but neither help the pain in my hands. hot water temporarily gives some relief. is this some type of arthritis? I am 51 and in fairly good health.

Hi, yep that certainly sounds like RA, (The beast that lurks within!). That`s where my RA started in my fingers and wrists, please make sure when you visit your GP you ask him to referr you to a Rheumatologist, so that you will get the best treatment for you quickly! I have now got it in most joints and suffering at the moment with the pain and soreness that goes with the stiffness, I am currently on Diclofenac and Tramadol for the pain, which is better (I think) than ibuprofen and naproxin and Methotrexate for the disease, but still too early to see if it working or not.

Yes, this is RA it will get worse with time. Finger excersices do help. If it is cold outside be sure and wear gloves.You will probably need some stronger medication and xrays provided by your doctor.Hope you can get some help. Good luck Cheryl
