Q: This fatigue was like a truck - anyone else?

I have not had this happen since before I started treatment. It's just too weird. I struggle daily with a certain level of fatigue, I don't have the energy or stamina that I had before I had RA and when I get a flare of pain and swelling in my joints it is certainly worse, but this was all fatigue without other symptoms. I'm chugging along trying to do my best, true, I'm working too much and not getting the rest I need because we are in a real crunch at work. But suddenly my fatigue levels were not just worse, like I need a nap worse, but worse like I literally can't get out of bed worse. I was laid low for 24 hours as if I had the flu. I had to call off sick - I couldn't do anything but sleep. What was odd was that it didn't seem to have any increase in joint pain to accompany it. Has this happened to anyone else? I guess I should slow it down a little and make sure I get my rest!

Hi, Leslie,

Yes, I know that truck!  It is RA behind the wheel and when I don't get enough rest, it runs over me and then backs up and runs over me again! Frown

Seriously, I have had this happen a couple of times.  It was always when I had been pushing too hard and not getting enough sleep.  Actually, not getting enough rest is a sure trigger for a flare for me. Work takes it out of me, and so I spend at least half of Saturday relaxing and/or sleeping.  If I don't, the fatigue takes over and then the increse in pain joins the party.

Sorry the RA truck came to visit you.  Hope you can get some extra rest and feel better soon!

I know this one very well. When you work yourself too hard, your body will ask nicely for you to rest for a while and then one day, it gets mad and makes you sit still. Usually while calling you nasty names. It's really important to manage your energy and know the signs that you're starting to run on fumes. I'm getting better at recognizing when I have to slow down and pay more attention to the signs that tell me that I need to stop right now this very instant. Still, sometimes it's not possible and then comes the crash. It sounds as if that's what happened to you. Still, if this is unusual for you, you may want to talk to your doctor about having some tests, just to check that everything's all right. Look at your iron, your vitamin B and D levels, etc.

And speaking of vitamin B… You may also consider looking into finding a licensed doctor of naturopathic medicine. They can be very helpful in terms of getting your general health to a better level. Last fall, I had a period of deep fatigue and spoke to my naturopath about it. She told me that one of the first things naturopaths do when their patients complain of fatigue is a give them B12 shots. I had it tested with my family doctor and according to Western/allopathic medicine, my B12 are within normal range. However, from a naturopath's point of view, they were probably a bit low. I now get B12 shots every two weeks and it helps tremendously.

Hi

Yes I get regular bouts of this, just sleep a lot and basically feel like your body is frozen in place.

The only cure I think it to rest when your body insists on it, but also try to pace yourself more so that you don't get hit so hard.
