Methotrexate is one of the DMARDs (disease modifying antirheumatic drug). It is a chemotherapy drug that has been used for decades to treat RA (in much smaller doses than when used as a chemotherapy drug). You can read more about the drug here.

 

If your concern that this might be a placebo stems from the drug not working, please speak to your rheumatologist, as you may need to increase the dose or consider another kind of medication. As well, methotrexate does take about 6-8 weeks to really kick in.
