Sunday, September 20, 2009 Callyoptra asks

Q: I just began rituximab treatments. What experiences have others had with this drug?

My last infusion was 5 weeks ago. I have energy in the morning, my cognitive functioning is signigicantly improved, but I still have some joint point in the am, knee pain that is most noticeable as I go up or down stairs, and I still get stiff after sitting for more than 10 minutes. More worrying, I am very fatigued in the afternoons and require a nap, which does help. I have already been through Enbrel and Humira. Is it possible that I need more than 6 weeks before my symptoms are considerably relieved? I fear this drug may not be working for me. The very thought is devastating. I am hoping those on rituxan will respond.

I haven't tried this drug, but I do know that there are a number of people on this site who have. Try asking the question again in the SharePost - they tend to get a lot more traffic than the individual questions in this section, so you may have more luck with responses that way. I would also suggest that you call your rheumatologist to have a conversation about what you can expect. Although I don't know too much about this particular form of treatment, it is my impression you may need a few infusions to get maximum impact. Talk to your doctor about what medication is available to help you bridge the gap - perhaps a small dose of prednisone could deal with some of your symptoms.
