Q: Is it osteo or RA...or neither?

Im 51 female.  My fingers joints have been a little sore for years; recently my toes chimed in (all both sides) and then this sudden flare up of both knees which the pain was horrendous. Ortho said its osteo and gave me synvisc injections which helped about 90%.  The thing is, my sed rate is significantly elevated and my PCP says osteo wouldn't do that.  Also the CRP is elevated too.   ANA is neg and Im awaiing an RF.     Im seeing a rheumatoligist next month, but just wondered what you all think.  No swelling, just stiffness and pain.  Oh and forgot to mention the pain down the side of the neck I've had for about six months.  It would almost be welcome to get a diagnosis of something so I can get some kind of treatment.    Thanks.

RA is the Tory as for being hard to pin down in the beginning, so it's hard to say what's going on with you, especially considering that you don't have any swelling. Although your symptoms do sound familiar, I'm not a doctor and can't really say one way or another. However, we recently published a post on blood tests and what they mean and you can read that here. I meant to say that RA is notorious for being hard to pin down. Sorry about that - I use a voice recognition software to write and sometimes, it misunderstands me. Smile
