Q: I just gave a urine sample to my doctor on Monday. I was looking through the results on the internet. It says there was a small amount of bilirubin found in my urine.

I was just looking up what bilirubin is and it's kind of scary what I read. Should I be worried about this?

Hello Jeanne,

It is normal to have small amounts of bilirubin in stool as it is a byproduct of red blood cell regeneration. Byproducts have to go somewhere.  It is usually filtered through the liver and is generally found more in stool as it aids in digestion. Trace amounts can be found in urine.  The basic concern would be the amount and whether your Urobilinogen levels are normal as they run hand in hand.  Did your doctor ask you to come back in for further testing?  My concerns would be whether you on are meds that affect liver or gallbladder function and whether your doctor finds it to be an acceptable trace amount.

If your doctor did not give you a call about concerns and you would like to know, give him/her a call.  Test results can be explained by physician assistants over the phone if your doc is not available.

let us know if the doc says anything
