Q: Do people who have RA have a high risk of developing diabetes?

I was diagnosed with RA 4 years ago. I had reactions at the injections sites when on Humira that took approximately 10 months to clear.  Then I was on Remicade infusions for 7 months when a blood test detected an abnormality in my blood which is found in patients with multiple myeloma. I was referred to an oncologist and now must have my blood tested every 6 months to watch the abnormal protein in my blood.  I have spots on my lungs that scans reflected was due to places I had lived in my past (AZ & MN) so I never was able to use Methotrexate.  Low doses of Prednisone are used when I am having a flare (no more than 10mg per day) anything higher causes more of an inflammation.

I am currently on Hydroxychloroquine 200mg b.i.d.

My mother and older brother have Type 2 diabetes.  With all these episodes of hot flashes and chills I decided to test my blood sugar and found it to be 132 today, usually it is around the low 90s.  (My husband has Type 2 diabetes so I used his meter to check).   I had noticed my husband would go through these type episodes when his diabetes would go out of whack.

People who have RA and are on steriods have an increased risk of diabetes.  But people taking Plaquenil/Hydroxychloroquine and/or Methotrexate have a decreased risk of insulin resistance. At this point, a more direct physiological link between RA and diabetes is unknown.

There is a useful article about this here: http://www.webmd.com/rheumatoid-arthritis/features/rheumatois-arthritis-diabetes

Hope this helps!

Leslie gave you a link to a really good reference. In this particular case, I think your family history will probably play a larger role than your RA. Still, I'd recommend you have a chat about the issue with your rheumatologist the next time you see them.

Good luck!
