Q: Mouth ulcers and Thrush?? Need answers???

I have been dealing with mouth ulcers since Oct 2nd, which turned into Strep, which turned into thrush.  The docs have cleared up the Strep and Thrush, but the mouth ulcers continue.  I have been taken off of Meth, and the ulcers have gotten better, but they have not gone completely away.  Doctors are not sure what is going on.  Family doctor feels it is a reaction to meds.  RA doctor thinks there is something else going on.  I'm really confussed and not sure what direction to go.  Does anyone have any insight on this situation and if so, what was the solution for you.  Really getting frustrated with mouth ulcers and would appreciate any and all advice.

Thanks in advance,

Michelle

Go see your dentist - they'll know more about healing things like canker sores than your regular doctor.

Hi Michelle....

Sorry to hear about your mouth ulcers etc. When I was on Methotrexate I would get those painful ulcers too. Were you taking Folic Acid on the days you weren't taking the methotrexate?

My Rheumy put me on the Folic Acid to counteract any side effects from the "Methotrexate" When I was taking the "metho" I did get those mouth ulcers once in awhile, and the folic acid helped to some degree, but never eliminated them completely.

Mouth ulcers are caused by many disorders. I know that good oral hygiene should help prevent mouth ulcers, and help the complications from mouth ulcers.

I have a few friends that would get these types of canker sores. They were hypothyroid and they had something in their system, or an imbalance, that caused this. I'm not saying this is happening in your case, but it is possible.

Your doctor should be able to do a CBC and perhaps find out something from that. Perhaps is would be a good idea to make an appointment with an oral pathologist, they surely could find out what's going on.

I hope your mouth heals and your feeling better! Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I had my first episode of thrush a few weeks ago and was miserable, but my rheumy put me on diflucan for a week and it cleared right up. I have always had a problem with mouth ulcers but luckily my husbands dad is a dentist and he told me it is probably a b vitamin deficiency so I started on a B complex vitamin and haven't had much of a problem since. Hope you get to feeling better soon!
