the Big Drugs (as I call the Biologics) do sound scary, but keep in mind that all medications have potentially rare serious side effects. Although you do get a bit extra risk with the Biologics, when they work, they are miracle drugs.
Lisa Emrich, one of our Experts, is on Rituxan and has written about her experience (here and here). If you still have questions after you read those posts, send her a private message and she'll be happy to talk to you about it. I'll also give her a heads-up that you need some feedback.
Hi Sherrell,
Like Lene mentioned, I am currently using Rituxan. Started it last November (one year ago) and have had four infusions. It made a noticeable difference for me within the first two weeks after the first infusion. So I'm definitely a responder.
I did experience the big potential infusion reaction, but managed to come through with extra doses of IV steroids and benedryl. I've needed these during each infusion following the first. Knowing that it might happen has been very helpful in not be scared.
I am careful to avoid people who are sick since Rituxan does effect the immune system. I've told family members to get me to the hospital if I suddenly have neurological symptoms because they could be caused by PML (progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy).
If you conduct a search on this site, you will find other patients who are using Rituxan as well. It's very helpful to read about other people's experiences. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
If you are uncomfortable with your doctor's care, then it is certainly an acceptable idea to get a second opinion. It is recommended that patients with hepatitis infections be monitored closely when they use Rituxan for hepatitis reactivation. Antivirals would need to be taken quickly.
You certainly do have a more complicated situation than might be understood at first. I'm not knowledgeable as so whether Rituxan is known to increase the risk of cancer reoccuring or not. It is used to treat non-Hodgkins lymphoma in addition to RA.
I wish you good luck on your search for a new doctor, or just a second opinion. It's your body and your treatment, so you are in charge!

Thanks for your answer. Right now I have to keep the rhuemy that I have because of pre-existing conditions. Once I have cleared that I will start researching new Drs.. The Dr. I have now doesn't seem as knowledgeable and isn't certain how I will do given that I have hepatitis, diabetes and having had cancer. I will continue to research the medicine and hopefully I will find answers to my concerns.
