age 58, dx 4/08, now on plaquenil, hx breast ca 1997, excellect p

sx started 4/08 raynauds, all bloodwork neg except rf 105 life...

06/30/08

58 female with hx breast ca 1997 with excellent prognosis.   Sx started suddenly in 4/08 with raynaud's - all w/u negative except RA 97.8

Had been on metoprolol for HTN and first rheum thought ^ RF secondary to med

No sx at that time - no pain, swelling, fatigue etc

Saw 2nd Rheum - MRI right hand normal,  MRI right wrist 5.0 mm interosseous cyst or marginal erosion involving distal pole of scaphoid .   There are additional tiny interosseous cysts in several of the carpus bones.  No additional bony erosions appreciated - Otherwise no acute process or specific MR evidence for RA.  Having sx now, joint pain esp in fingers, also pads of fingers, fatigue is terrible,  taking aleve bid, mvi, oscal, procardia  XL 60mg for raynauds.

Started on Plaquenil 200mg alt with 400mg QOD 6/20/08.   My rheumatologist said this is the least toxic of the drugs and I certainly appreciate that.   However, I keep wondering,

am I wasting time while further damage occurs waiting to see if Plaqenil works for me.

I've read it's only effective in 30% of patients.  Realize I'm not a candidate for biologics with hx breast ca but think I am for B cell mediated therapy.   Goal is to do as much possible as soon as possible to prevent damage and stay as normal as possible.

what are your thoughts on glucosamine (sp?) and chondroitin - safe to take??

also read Biotin helpful - safe??

Appreciate any input or advise you can offer.   Hoping to live out the remaining years of my life in some degree of comfort and purpose,    Thanks pat
