Q: Cat Scan Guided Hip Injections, anyone?

I am having a cat scan guided injection in my hip later this month.  I had one a year ago and it worked wonders. The pain in my hip prohibits me from sleeping on that side and if I sit down for awhile and get up to walk, it makes me limp.  It is pretty painful, and I don't really understand what is going on. The first time I had the shot my doctor ( an orthopaedic surgeon ) told him that if the shot didn't work the only other alternative was to remove the scar tissue.  Scar tissue?  I have no idea how I ended up w/scar tissue in my hip. I don't have RA. I have Erosive Inflammatory Arthritis, OA and Fibro. Whatever the case, the shot l had a year ago lasted for ten months, so I am happy to try it again.  Anyone else have this type of issue w/their hips?  Thanks for any info you may be able to provide.  V

I have alot of pain in both my hips.  My dr keeps threatening me with the cat scan hip injections so I just keep my mouth shut.  Is it painful?  I am afraid of someone sticking a needle in my hip joint.

Hi, Hope.  Don't be afraid of the injection.  I had one last July and it was such a relief.  It didn't hurt much at all and brought almost immediate relief. It takes them a little bit to find the exact location for the injection with the cat scan, and then the injection take just a minute.  I cannot stress enough how much that shot helped me. I am really looking forward to getting it done again. My left hip is in constant pain  now.

Scar Tissue?  Yes V, scare tissue.  The cartilage in your hip is slowly eroding.  Any time the erosion is not active, the body will heal itself a bit.  The cartilage cannot grow back so scar tissue will take its place.  The scar tissue is not as lubricated or as forgiving as cartilage, so will cause burning pain if stretched or ripped.

I have not had any kinds of injections into my hip.  Unfortunately, all my docs have been more concerned with my knees and elbows that they (and I) have totally ignored my hips issues.  That and my tolerance for pain has thrown everyone off course.

When the pain became unbearable, they finally did another xray (last one of my hip was 10 yr ago).  Will it seems my cartilage in my hip has walked away.  Not a drop left and my hip bone is grinding and shattering my pelvis.

So now on to hip replacement!!  Hopefully, sometime this month, cuz I can't stand the pain anymore.

The Arava and Simponi seem to be working for the rest of my body, but ya just can't walk right with bad knees and a busted, rusty hip!!!

Good Luck, with the injection.  Wish I could get one. I am jealous

Wow, Ronie!  You are going to be bionic woman when they get thru with you.  My ortho says both my knees need replaced, but we are trying to put it off for a few years.  Does this hip pain thing mean I might eventually need a hip replacement too???  Yikes, this is a pain in the @##, or at least the hip! Surprised

I doubt I will be a bionic woman.  I actually wrote in to one of the other shareposts, that they should really just do it all at the same time and spare me the trouble.  Make me "Faster, Better, Stronger" NOW!!!

So far nothing has been replaced but I have had scopes and scrapes of all my wrists, elbows and knees over the last 20 blah blah years. AAAAHHHH good times!!! I have also had carpal tunnel surgery and gastic bypass.  Not so bad, Mom had both her knees replaced before she was 40.

Well, as far as you needing replacement, it would depend on the amount of damage already done and whether the meds you are on are actually decreasing the activity of the damage like its supposed to.

Like I said, I never had a problem with my hip except it would occasionally give out for just a second.  When the doc looked at the xray with astonishment on how I was still walking around (all crocked, limpy and on forearm crutches), I asked him if it was because I went 2 years without meds.  He said that kind of damage takes a whole lot longer than just 2 years to produce.  So I looked back to remember when my hip started "acting up" and I figure it was about 10 years ago.  I had just started Enbrel at the time.  But I find it funny how he suddenly put the problems with my knees on the back burner.  How am I supposed to learn how to walk with a new hip with 2 bad knees and no strength in my elbows or wrists to support myself.  Now that is going to be a challege.  Am I going to make it to the potty??????

And you are right, it is a pain in the a$$.  Literally.  I can point to exactly where on my a$$ it hurts and everywhere around in that area... LOL

Enjoy the holiday, Miss V.
