Q: Maintaining Range Of Motion During A Flare?

My elbows are swollen and painful.  I found I was losing range of motion in my right arm/elbow.  I've been doing gentle range-of-motion exercises to keep my elbow from freezing up.  I think this is the right thing to do, but I have never had this issue before.  I do see my rheumy on the 18th.  I am just having so many things pop up lately.  Humira is great for my fatigue, but it doesn't seem to be helping my joints yet.  Should I continue to gently exercise that arm/elbow?

Thanks!

V

Get you Tai Chi videos out sweetie.  Of course you are going to hear it from everyone, "move it or lose it."  Just remember where you move it to...hahahaha.

For my elbows I do a lot of gentle massaging of the swollen area to take release so of the fluid if possible.  And remember R.I.C.E.  rest, ice/heat, compression and elevation!!!!!

And of course if you don't have one, get yourself a neoprene elbow brace.  Some biofreeze will help too.

Believe it or not, every morning I still so all my stretches like I used to do everyday before softball games.  The arm stretches, and cirlcles, the torso stretches, etc.  However, now I do the hurdle stretches on the bed..hahaha.  There is no way I could even contemplate getting on the floor for that.

I'm not a doctor but apparently I'm going to play one on the internet. Last week my shoulder was completely frozen when I saw my rheumy he gave me a cortisone injection and a script for PT.

Obviously your mileage my vary. If you think you might be doing more damage call your rheumy and ask...there is NO silly question.

What my doc said to me was move it or lose it...and believe me, I am.

I hope your elbows start giving you a break...isn't RA supposed to be giving you a vacation right now?

Feel better!

Hi, Melissa,

That is my reasoning, too.  If I don't move it, it is going to freeze up.  I just do a few range of motion exercises a couple of times a day, and that seems to keep it from becoming so stilff that it won't move.

Yeah...RA and I had our vacation. It behaved surprisingly well.  Now vacation is over.  I guess all bets are off! LOL

The general rule is: If it hurts while you are doing it, stop.  Other than that, everything goes.

I have lost the ablity to fully straighten my elbows without pain.  I believe my rheumy called it constriction or something like that.

Heat may help before and after the exercise -- I know that for me, during a flare, ice is O-U-T out ;)

My RA seems to travel, hands, to knees, to shoulders etc. I have an ongoing appointment with a massage therapist who does wonders in stretching and releasing the joints. The deep tissue massage helps tremendeously, also tai chi massage is awesome. Kathy

Hi V,

Absolutely!!! Unless it is hurting during exercising, keep your elbow and all other joints moving! I find that heat applied before you do the range of motion exercises really helps get the pain down and also helps you improve your range of motion.

I did not know the importance of keeping your joints moving during the early stages of my RA and have lost movement in many of my joints. Believe me, it is true – you don’t use it, you lose it!!

Hope you will feel much better!!

I wish I'd known about movement during flares years ago... I ended up developing an elbow contracture that required surgery and months of PT :(

Best suggestion: make an appt right away with a physical therapist !  he/she can give you suggestions how to safely keep your elbow joint moving in ways that may prevent future problems !  Not realistic for most of us to know how to do this on our own or just by watching youtube :)

good luck
